Some of Preston’s finest amateur footballers of days gone by enjoyed a reunion on Friday evening.

Around 80 former players and officials from the era of the 1960s and 1970s recounted tales and swapped memorabilia at the Ale Emporium.

The event was organised by Wilf Riley, who played for English Martys Juniors in the 1965 Catholic Under-18s Cup Final against St Jospeh’s B at Deepdale.

Many players from both sides attended the reunion, as well as members of the successful Ribbleton Avenue Methodists team which won the prestigious Hunts Cup in 1975. More than £400 was raised on the night for St Catherine’s Hospice Appeal and ex-PNE star George Ross was the special guest.

“A great night was had by all,” said Riley. “It was great to see 10 ex-players from the St Josephs and English Martyrs squads.”

If you would like to donate to the hospice appeal, the fund is still open. Please send cheques to Wilf Riley, 52 Moss Lane, Lostock Hall, Preston, PR5 5BT.
