Edgar upstaged by rampant Shrimps

Stewart Drummond keeps tabs on Dutch legend Edgar Davids

Morecambe recorded their biggest home win of the season to sting the Bees of Barnet.

Two early goals and a brace of penalties from Richard Brodie in the final stages of the game gave the Shrimps their third home victory of the campaign.

Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley was forced to make three changes from the midweek game at Accrington with injuries to Barry Roche, Will Haining and Jack Redshaw but his side were soon on the front foot against a Barbet side including Holland legend Edgar Davids.

Lewis Alessandra forced Barnet keeper Graham Stack into an early save and the pressure continued with Morecambe taking the lead on six minutes.

Kevin Ellison turned sharply down the right and used the space afforded him to produce a left foot shot that took a deflection to beat the wrong footed Bees’ goalkeeper.

Four minutes later it was 2-0. Again the normally solid Barnet defence opened up as Gary McDonald threaded the perfect through ball for Andy Fleming to score at full stretch from an acute angle.

Barnet came back into things but only tested Andreas Arestidou on one occasion with a weak Davids shot before Clovis Kamdjo saw two efforts in quick succession blocked by Ellison and Nick Fenton.

The visitors started the second half on the front foot with Mark Byrne missing the target twice from good positions before the game became something of a midfield scrap in the rain.

The match livened up again with a hectic final 10 minutes as the Shrimps were awarded two soft penalties.

On 81 minutes Barry Fuller was adjudged to have brought down Lewis Alessandra and Brodie stepped up to slam home the spot kick.

Minutes later Brodie doubled his tally with another spot kick after Krystian Pearce handled in the box.

Barnet scored an injury-time consolation from Jon Nurse when he stabbed the ball home from close range after the home defence failed to clear a Mark Byrne corner.

It was the only downside to a convincing Shrimps’ performance.
