ALL-ROUND TALENT: Chris Joyce enjoying his medical studies
Flying doctor Chris Joyce is chasing further honours after a splendid performance at this month’s European Triathlon Championships.
The super-fit 23-year-old will begin work as a doctor at the Royal Preston Hospital next month, following a series of impressive performances in the gruelling multi-distance sport.
Joyce, who won the ‘sprint‘ event in the 20-24 men’s age group at the European Championships, held in Athlone, trains for four hours a day as he aims to fulfil his long-term ambition of representing Britain in the senior elite triathlon team.
He said; “Over the next two to three years I’m aiming to bridge the gap from a top age group amateur athlete into a successful professional, elite triathlete.
“With my race achievements to date this is very possible, but it will require continued hard work and dedication.”
During his training, Joyce, who also has a Sports and Science degree, is aiming to become a full-time sports doctor.
To help reach his goal, Joyce has been given £500 in sponsorship by Preston law firm MWR Solicitors to pay for an endurance coach to build up his stamina.
“Studying medicine and competing to a high level of sport is very time consuming and expensive, but I’m pleased with the progress I’ve made.
“The next few years will be a massive challenge, but I’m really looking forward to it.”
Preston law firm MWR Solicitors decided to support Joyce’s training after his training partner Altaf Patel spotted him training at Fulwood Leisure Centre, where he is a spinning instructor.
Patel said: “After watching Chris train on a regular basis, it is clear he’s a very dedicated athlete and has the talent to go a long, long way in his chosen sport.”
