THE Guild Hall could be the stage for a blockbuster bout between two of the North West’s top boxers later this year.

Preston light-heavyweight star Matty Clarkson is poised to take on Southport’s Mike Stafford in a contest which is sure to capture the imagination of fight fans across the region.

It is understood provisional talks have already taken place with bosses at the Guild Hall and the fight has been pencilled in for November.

Stafford’s trainer Karl Ince, who is from Preston, said: “We’ve had some good news this week. We are looking at a British title eliminator between Matty and Mike.

“I know Matty well – I used to have him at my gym and he’s a good lad. But Mike’s my fighter and it should be a right ding-dong battle between those two.

“I’ve spoken to Mike’s promoter and the fight could happen in November. It would be great if we could get it on in Preston. Matty’s a Preston lad and Mike’s from just around the corner in Southport.”

Meanwhile, Ince was celebrating this week after opening a new professional gym in Preston.

Previously, the trainer put his stable of fighters through their paces at the Elite Gym, in Bolton. However, Ince has developed his own facility at his home in Catforth.

“It’s great to have the gym here in Preston. It’s a proper training camp and the lads have got everything they need,” Ince said.

“It’s my ambition to have a champion from Preston.”

On Saturday, Preston
light-middleweight Mick Hall, who is trained by Ince, will be in action at the Macron Stadium, in Bolton.

Also on the bill are Rick Skelton, Mark Thompson and Shayne Singleton.
