Preston boxer Lisa Whiteside is just days away from the moment which could define her career.
The World Championship silver medallist is set to face Olympic champion Nicola Adams in the English ABA National Championships at the Liverpool Arena.
The duo are in direct competition with each other in the 51kg weight category for the single spot at the next Olympics in Rio de Janiero in 2016.
Having won at the London Games, Adams will be highly fancied to make the plane for Rio, but Whiteside – who is two years her junior – will be hungry to show that she is the best in Britain.
The scheduled fight, which should take place a week tomorrow providing both fighters win their respective quarter and semi-finals, should be a blockbuster.
Whiteside said: “I’ve never fought Nicola before, but I have sparred with her.
“I have the utmost respect for Nicola.
“She’s the Olympic champion and if she’s on her game and is fit, it’s going to be a very hard fight.”
Whoever comes out on top in next weekend’s encounter will put themselves in pole position for next year’s Olympics.
And Whiteside, who trains at Larches and Savick Amateur Boxing Club, would dearly love for the public of Preston to support her in Liverpool.
She added:“It will be great to have the backing of the people of Preston and have them cheering me on.
“I think it will help me and give me the motivation to go out and win and do my best.”
