Preston’s College student Kyle Carey has been called up to the New Horizons development squad for the coming year as he continues his successful basketball career.
Carey, 17, is a member of the college’s new basketball academy, and has impressed in games for Team Preston so far this season.
He is originally from London but made the move north to join the unique academy, and has also been called up to play for his home borough in regional competitions and will attend the England Basketball camp over Easter.
He will now join a squad of talented young players for games and training sessions with England Basketball in the hope of furthering his basketball career.
Carey said: “I’m pleased that my performances have been recognised and it will be a great experience to train and play with the New Horizons squad.
“I’ve been playing basketball for a number of years and came up to join Team Preston because there seemed to be a really good programme starting up here that could help me to develop as a player.
“As a result, I’ve got this chance with England but I’m also getting experience of playing and picking up some good tips from an experienced coach.”
Malcolm Leak, Carey’s coach at Team Preston said: “Kyle has got the commitment, drive and talent to be a top player. I believe he could be the next Luol Deng and really make it over in the States.
“We started this programme so that we could help bring on basketball in this country and bring through more and more talented players.
“I’m hopeful that we’ll see many more players follow in Kyle’s footsteps and I’ll be doing everything in my power to make sure that happens.”
