Paralympic joy for teenager Towers

Next stop Rio - that's the exciting itinerary for teenager Isaac Towers, after being called up to the Great Britain squad for the Rio Paralympics.

And at 17, Towers, who will compete in the T-34 800 metres, will be one of the youngest of the 54-strong elite team travelling to Brazil.

Naturally, the Catterall athlete, who was recently crowned European champion, is delighted and vowed not to be overawed by the experience.

He said: “It is the pinnacle of sport to be able to compete against the best in the Games, but I have been involved in world and European championships, and it is what you aim for.

“It is something that I have worked for over four years,” said the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde athlete, who used to attend KES School at Lytham and is studying at Cardinal Newman College in Preston,

Towers knows that he will have to perform at his highest-ever levels to get in contention in Brazil,

He said: “My times at the moment put me just outside the medals. but there is nothing to say that I can’t get a personal best and maybe get towards competing for them.”
