Southlands High School Year 7 student Izzy Thompson won gold in discus at the County Championships and broke a county record.

Thompson threw her discus 24.09 metres to gain a new championship record.

The youngster only started to learn how to throw a year ago but through dedication and hard work she has achieved a new record.

It was her Year 6 primary school teacher who noted that she had great ability throwing a foam javelin and suggested Izzy joined a Chorley athletics group.

After joining Chorley Athletics and Triathlon Club, the youngster began throwing a discus and committed herself to several training session a week.

The County Championships were held earlier this month in Blackpool and there were many teams from across Lancashire competing.

Thompson’s attempt to secure a medal had a strong start as she beat the standard on her first throw, which allowed her to have six more attempts.

It was on the last throw that Thompson beat the Lancashire record and secured the gold medal.

She said: “It felt amazing to win the gold medal and beat the Lancashire record.

“Everyone in the spectators’ tent who was supporting me jumped up in the air and they were cheering for me.

“My mum said that as soon as the discus left my hand on the last throw that she knew it was going to be a big throw.”

Another Chorley Athletic and Triathlon Club member took part in the Hutton Roof Fell race.

Young Kian Davis claimed first home in the Under-16s race.

Club coach Stuart Swann said: “Well done to Kian who had a brilliant run to claim first place.”
