Alison is ready for Serbian adventure

Chorley athlete Alison Leonard is heading to Serbia to compete for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team in the European Junior Championships.

The 800m ace secured her selection by winning the trial race at the England Under-20s Championships staged in Bedford.

The European event takes place in Novi Sad, Serbia, from July 23-26.

And Leonard, 19, has her eyes firmly on a medal after winning a silver medal at the IAAF World Youth Championships in 2007 and finishing fourth at last year's IAAF World Junior Championships.

Leonard started off her athletics career with Chorley Harriers, where her parents were both members, and now runs for Blackburn Harriers.

She is one of 60 talented young middle distance athletes benefiting from double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes' 'On Camp with Kelly' initiative.

Holmes said: "I would like to congratulate Alison and her coach Arthur Almond on her excellent performances this season and on her selection

for the European Junior Championships.

"She is a very talented athlete and I have no doubt that she will perform very well in Serbia and that it will be a valuable learning experience for her as London 2012 moves ever nearer."
