AFC Fylde 5 New Mills 0
Saturday, May 9, will go down in history for AFC Fylde after they demolished New Mills in a second-half display that clinched the Vodkat League Premier Division title on goal difference.
Alan Jackson scored the all-important opener after Richie Allen worked his magic on the left flank and created an opening for Jackson to stab the ball home on 44 minutes.
Prior to Fylde's opener New Mills squandered two good chances, and in the second half Fylde upped the ante.
Mark Wane had a chance to score a crucial second only to be denied by excellent goalkeeping while Fylde's own stopper Nathan Worrell was at his best with two fantastic saves.
Fylde then won a penalty after Mick Horsfall's cross was handled by a defender, and Joe Booth stepped up with a cool-as-you-like finish to send the home fans wild with excitement on 69 minutes.
The goal rocked New Mills and when sub Glenn Steel crashed the ball home from just inside the box on 83 minutes it was all over.
There was still time for more when Joe Booth added a fourth goal on 88 minutes and Matt Walwyn completed the rout with virtually his first touch when coming on late on – to send the club record crowd of 1,217 into ecstacy.
Fylde boss Mick Fuller could not hide his delight, and said: "It's always hard when you're playing at home and have to go all out for a win, but I have give great credit to the players for their performance.
"Getting the goal just before half time was crucial, and I told the players at the break that we mustn't sit back, we needed to keep up the pressure.
"In the end we were emphatic winners, and it was a massive day for the club and our supporters, who turned out in huge numbers. It's been hectic in the past few weeks and I need a break now!"
