Man charged over attack on prison officer

A 22-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm following the serious assault of a prison officer in Lancashire.
Lee Campbell, of Fenton Road, Fulwood, has been bailed to appear at Preston magistrates' court on August 14.

Father-of-two Paul Ely, 38, who works at HMP Garth in Leyland, is in intensive care at Royal Preston Hospital where his condition is described as "critical but stable".

The attack took place at the junction of Fishergate and Cheapside in the city centre at around 1.15am on Sunday.

Mr Ely's skull was broken and his wife Pauline is said to be keeping a vigil by his bedside.

The Formula One fan, from Freckleton, near Preston, was attacked close to the Ann Summers shop in Preston city centre.

Inspector Simon Atkinson, said: "As a result of police enquiries a 22-year-old man was charged with GBH."
