An estimated 1,300 new jobs will be created in Preston's revamped £700m city centre, experts behind the plan today predicted.
In total, 4,000 people will work in the city centre and the new jobs in the completed development will boost Preston's economy by £15m, claim the developers.

Consultants at Ramboll Whitbybird, who have drawn up a environmental statement, setting o
ut the impact the development will have on the city, believe the ambitious project will create at least 824 full time jobs.

Cinemas, shops, cafes and businesses will create up to 540 new jobs. Many of those, the firm suggests, could be taken up by the city's unemployed.

In total, 3,922 people will work in the completed development. Ramboll Whitbybird expects many of those to go to displaced workers brought in by companies from other areas, or to workers already employed in the area.

But the creation of a Preston Office Quarter and other potential projects around the Tithebarn area could create thousands more jobs.

City council leader Ken Hudson said: "One of our key priorities is to tackle worklessness and providing that number of jobs is a welcome boost for the city."

Now now, don't you start upsetting the poor little benefit scroungers with nasty words like "jobs" and "work". We don't want them getting stressed at the prospect of having to earn some money, instead of the rest of us lining their pockets !!
824 jobs ?? H'mmm, how about a little experiment were 824 people get their benefits cancelled and see if the 824 jobs get filled ??
Call me Mr Optimist, but i bet they do !!!!

kells95e - i agree but its too much hassle for the ones who are in employment who find it too hard to think of these kinds of solutions as pushing a pen would burn too much calories and they'd be exhausted

I fully agree and cannot wait for the re-development to begin! Bigger firms are more likely yo come to our wonderful "city" which may actually pay high salaries! Rather then people looking at it like a hinder they need to look at it has a good thing, bringing money to Preston, bringing us into modern times, also the run down areas in town will be used once again. It will be amazing if we get people from all over coming to our "city" rather then us going to Liverpool or Manchester etc, this development will actually help our city status!

As has been said before, Prestons claim to be a city died the day the docks closed and the haulage came off the trains, don't get me wrong, we're still a very nice large town and anything that get's the local economy moving is to be welcomed, however, i wait with baited breath on the jobs prospects, (sorry benefit scroungers, didn't mean to swear!!)

Do a google search on Ramboll Whirlybird, nice to know exactly who these people are.

Jobs created in one shop are usually at the expense of jobs in another shop - people don't suddenly have extra cash to spend because there are extra shops.

Kells95e - give it up, that argument is lost. Preston's a city. Get used to it.

The jobs will be mainly low pay retail jobs. We can't have a viable economy by just selling stuff to one another - somebody actually has to make something in the first place, and the only people doing that these days are the Chinese!

You stick by your beliefs kells95, My old man use to take me to the docks, happy days, thriving businesses, banter, little earners here and there, happy days!
Use to watch the old steam trains at the back of leyland rd as well, happy days !!
