Linda Schofield was recovering from breast cancer at home when she decided to take a decisive step.
She says: "I didn't want to be sat in my lounge watching people go by."
Rather than spend all her time on her sofa recuperating while watching TV, Linda got involved with co-ordinating a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Fulwood, where she lives.
She proved such a success that three years later she became a volunteer with Lancashire police.
Mum-of-two Linda, 47, is now a familiar face around the Garrison ward.
She is regularly spotted cleaning up graffiti, picking up litter from parks and speaking to residents who have concerns about criminal behaviour.
She also takes the minutes at community policing meetings and pops into Fulwood police station two or three times a week to help with office tasks.
Linda's efforts free up time for bobbies to get back out on the beat, instead of getting stuck behind desks, tackling paperwork.
