Controversial plans to open a gambling arcade on a Lancashire high street have been thrown out.
A bid was lodged to turn the former Woolwich building society, on the corner of Lune Street and Fishergate, Preston, into an over-18s slot machine centre.

But the plans were condemned as "tacky" and "inappropriate" for the landmark listed building, which has been empty since February 2007.

Planners rejected the idea because of the impact they felt it would have had on the listed building and on the Winckley Square conservation area.

On a serious note! I'm glad it was rejected. These gambling den bosses are parasites on society getting rich off the misery of people who are addicted to these things. Fruit machines ruin peoples lives! I'd ban them totally from the UK if I could.

Thank god for that! The city centre does not need a gambling arcade. It could make a good office for a firm of IFA's or similiar

Seconded Cartman. Bloke who volunteered for Gamblers Anonymous once told me fruit machines were by miles the most common route into problem gambling. They're everywhere and give the addict a quick hit with every press.

I can honestly say I'm very surprised to see this rejected given Preston's planning track record. Well done to the planning committee - showing some backbone at last.

I think it's also very likely that there's an appeal process somewhere that the arcade people will use to attempt to overturn this decision though, so early yet for celebrations.

Maybe we should lobby the councillors if an appeal is presented.
