The potential future of a piece of Preston's proud history has been unveiled - and you can have a say.
Designers have come up with a host of visions for transforming the 800-year-old Flag Market, including a giant TV screen, water fountain, electronic banners and even glass water walls.

Starting on Monday November 3, members of the public will be given a chance to make their views known during a week-long consultation.

It follows criticism of the handling of the planned £3m revamp of Winckley Square which was branded "daft" and "self-indulgent".

Six design companies have given a different interpretation of how they see the future of the historic square.

A judging panel met in private last Wednesday to see presentations of each of the designs and picked their favourite.

Following political pressure the public will now be asked to give their comments on the designs, with the feedback used to help decide what happens next.

The flag market is unique. Leave it alone and use it for what it was originally intended, a market.

Absolutely agree Raefil. These designs mean the end of Preston markets, fun fairs and celebrations. The only thing they should consider is a stage. To allow local to put on shows etc.

Yes it is a local market for local people.

The only time it's been used as a market in recent years has been to host the overpriced so-called Continental Market.
Nowadays it's more likely to be used as a fairground, hot-dog, baked potato, ice cream sellers stand, the occasional - and disastrous - ice skating rink, regular caravan recruitment drives by the Armed Forces, as a pigeon feeding centre and illegal all-day parking lot for BMW, Audi and Mercedes 4x4's.

Totally agree with most of the above posts and even my 18 year old daughter says - why touch it, yes level the flags, BUT keep OUR history.

It is unique, keep it that way without the pretentious tat that some advocating.

LEP - THE COUNCIL & ANY OTHER DECISION MAKER in this process - in a true democracy why not give us OPTION 7 - KEEP IT AS IT IS.

Just a thought - I also suspect that would win

Two memorials could be built, one for the 1648 near the London Rd Bridge as a City gateway structure and one for the 1715 on Old Friargate or near the Old Post Office. we could also mark Preston's maritime and aviation heritage too. surely we could do these things and still incorporate a TV screen and a couple of fountains somewhere in the centre without having to drastically change the Flagmarket or WS - please think

These are all shocking designs and none should be allowed anywhere near the 'historic' flag market. I put historic in quotation marks because not one of these designs reflects that this is a very old area of Preston that should be protected. Also, have the designers considered that a cenotaph is in this area and should not be overlooked by such gaudy designs?

The area should be left as it - perhaps with just a slight revamp of the flags etc. There is already two lovely focal points in this area, the Harris Museum & Art Gallery and the cenotaoh.
