The man behind Preston's £700m regeneration has vowed the project would give the city a character all its own.
Richard Coppell of the Preston Tithebarn Partnership spoke as long-awaited plans for the development arrived at the Town Hall.

Preston people will be able to see the outline plans – and have their say on them – when a major consultation exercise begins next week.

Mr Coppell promised a "distinctive" and "quality" development which will finally put the city on the map.

The 1.5million sq ft scheme, anchored by a flagship John Lewis store and a big Marks and Spencer, will feature more than 100 shops, new restaurants and cafes and a cinema.

Mr Coppell said Preston's existing shops were "poor" and Tithebarn would "put the city on the map from a retail point of view."

He went on to dismiss suggestions the development would be bland.

He said: "We don't want this to look like any other development.

"We are employing seven different architect practices to ensure variety, quality and distinctive design.

"At the moment it is a city without decent shopping in it...it has not got the modern shopping you would expect of a city of this status."

I look forward to seeing bold and distinctive designs. The "artist's impressions" we've seen so far are generic, dull and so angular they must have been drawn with an Echosketch! Hopefully, they will bear no relation to what is eventually built.

But I doubt Tithebarn will be "distinctive". It's likely to be similar to all the other contemporary developments, because that is what is thought of as bold and distinctive today turns into the everyday and standard of tomorrow.

Sorry - not "Echosketch" (although that actually fits with what I was saying!). I of course meant Etch-a-Sketch.

I look forward to seeing them too, be able to finally make a real judgement.

I am pleased Preston will finally be put on the map. I was tired of opening up the Preston and Blackpool Landranger only to find a blank space where Preston should be. But I fear for the future of the pigeons. There are flocks of them on the open space between the Tithebarn and the bus station, where will they all go? I expect the scheme will bring some benefits, but there will probably be some unforeseen consequences

Funnily enough, Billy J, Preston is often left off maps - ones like the weather map on TV or, I noticed, the map they use on The Hairy Bikers. Blackpool often features, and Blackburn turns up quite often, but it's rare for Preston to make an appearance. I can't see why - if nothing else, Preston's at the centre of rail and road networks and is an important "hub" - certainly more so than Blackpool or Blackburn.

I see Preston on weather maps quite often. Also Preston is on most train maps and motorway maps in fact the only map I aint seen it on is the govermant map.

That headline should read: 'Tithebarn to give city a NEW identity'. For good or ill the place already has an identity, which this regeneration will erase. But do you trust these people to replace it with something better?

Whatever this new identity is going to be, presumably we'll have to buy it from John Lewis?

"Whatever this new identity is going to be, presumably we'll have to buy it from John Lewis?"
Yes you will have to buy it at great expense but from the Duke of Westminster.

Why does Preston need a new identity? has it broken the law? or grassed somebody up. I do know of some good websites where you can get forged ones. But I don't think Tithebarn is supposed to put Preston on the weather map, Preston isn't a meteorological event (though I have heard of Preston Drizzle) It has earned its place on Weather maps as it holds the British record for most rainfall in a 5 minute period - 32mm on 10th August, 1893
