Strikers take lessons at finishing school

Preston North End's goal-shy frontmen have volunteered to attend finishing school during the international break in a bid to find their shooting boots again.
Manager Alan Irvine has revealed his strikers – and a handful of attacking midfield players – have been getting in extra target practice to get back on the scoresheet.

North End have netted only 12 times in 10 league matches so far this season despite conjuring up an average of 12.6 goal attempts a game.

But Irvine told the Evening Post: "I doubt if anyone does any more finishing than us on the training ground.

"We have a group of lads who stay behind after every session to do individual finishing.

"There are probably about 10 of them who work on drills almost on a daily basis.

"We are certainly working on that side of the game and we will continue to do so."

With six strikers on the books – and a wannabe seventh in Simon Whaley –Preston could have expected the 'goals for' column to be much healthier.

>> Irvine to report Watford to league

Of the half-dozen recognised frontmen, only Neil Mellor has so far found the net with the season almost a quarter the way through.

His three goals in the league and two in the Carling Cup make him the most productive striker in the squad.

Chris Brown, Stephen Elliott, Jon Parkin, Karl Hawley and Brett Ormerod have yet to open their accounts this term, although Brown has only made three appearances through injury, Hawley has now been farmed out on loan to Northampton and Ormerod has yet to kick a ball in first-team anger.

Ormerod did hit a couple in the reserves' 5-0 demolition of Rochdale's second string in midweek. But of all the six, he has had the least opportunity to shine, not even in the 16 for the 10 league matches and merely an unusued sub for the two Carling Cup ties.

IT is all well and good having strikers practising putting the ball away........... however if they don't get the service in the game what is the point??!!

Mellor and brown aren't the type of players like Nugent who can MAKE a goal happen by picking up the ball 30 yards out and racing at defenders. They need service and quality balls through to them so that they can put them away.

At the moment our problems once again come from midfield.

Well Tom it does say they are averagin 12.6 attempts on goal a game so maybe most of the blame lies at the strikers door.

Some good and valid comments Tom, the service to the front men is very poor, there is no spreading the ball out to the wings at the moment, it all seems down the middle and easy to deal with, an on form Simon Whaley may be the solution??

i dont think shooting practice is required after training for some of our strikers, a trip to the local weight watchers would be better!!!

We need to sort the defence out first!! it doesn't matter how many we score if we conceed more than that figure!! As someone has pointed out we Average 12 shots a game so you would expect us to be at least scoring 2 of those

And people said i was wrong and knew nothing about football when last season and in the summer break i said Mellor was not the answer, just look at his record at all clubs for goals per game ratio.

I think Eliott should be give an extended run in the side as he has a proven goal record at this level.

Good strikers cost a lot of money, to buy and to pay, and with the influx of foreign players into the premiership, and the relegation to the Championship - with parachute payments - of some massive clubs, the sad fact is that we will not attract top strikers.
We need some flair and unpredictability, like a Fuller or a Nuge, I don't see that from any of the current workman-like bunch.
There are two possible solutions - cast our net wider ie abroad, or buy strikers deemed not good enough by other championship sides and hope Alan and the staff can improve their game. We seem to have the latter approach, but it doesn't appear to be working yet.
