Striker dilemma for Irvine

Preston North End boss Alan Irvine admits he could be reaching for the paracetamol next week when he tries to select a frontline to face Coventry City.
Blessed with six strikers following the arrival of Jon Parkin and Stephen Elliott over the past week, the Scot is expecting to have the most painful selection headache of his 10 months as a manager.

Chris Brown is hoping to be fit for the Ricoh Arena, meaning Irvine will have to disappoint at least two, possibly even three, of his half-dozen as he picks a squad capable of maitaining North End's unbeaten run in the league.

"We've got some good options now," he told the Evening Post. "We had some before, but there are more permutations now.

"It is going to mean a massive headache for me, there's no doubt about that.

"The lads are all desperate to play and that gives me a problem.

"But the fact is it is a far better headache to have than the other way round where we don't have enough strikers.

"We have got people with good goalscoring records and that is really important.

"We have talked about a lack of goals so far this season. Well, we feel that adding goals to this team has got to be good."

Brown's possible return to the fold for the first time this season following an ankle problem and sciatica means that, with 6ft 4in Parkin, North End possess an huge aerial threat if Irvine decides to use it.

He also has the predatory instincts of Neil Mellor and new boy Elliott.

And in addition he has Karl Hawley and Brett Ormerod who can both cause defences trouble on the ground.

"The two big ones, Browny and Jon, probably play more with their backs to goal," Irvine said.

"Karl is also comfortable playing like that and holding the ball up. Mellor, Brett and Stephen want to run in behind defences. So it is a nice balance.

"I have a lot of thinking to do before the Coventry game."

With Simon Whaley also pushing to play up front after getting a taste for the striker role in the early games of the season, Irvine effectively has seven players he can now call on to spearhead the attack.

I think the 11 that will play at Cov will be the following.........

--------------Lonners-------------------

Jones -- Mawene -- Ledger -- Callum/Hart(Injury depending)

Nicho -- Chappers -- Kenna -- Sedgaldinho

--------Parkin -- Mellor -----------

and before Elly starts about me leaving out Brown.........

I don't think Parkin should be dropped following his debut performance and possession is 9/10ths of the law so people will have to oust the 2 in possession of the shirts at the moment.

The midfield doesn't need touching at the moment unless Nicho has a 45 like he did at Wednesday then i would switch sedge over to the right and bring on Wallace.

Other than that as you were why change a winning 11?

Spot on, Tom. With Brown/Wallace/Elliott perhaps coming on at some stage. Not that much of a dilemma, more a luxury. Cheers, all.

Tom

Daft as may seem I was actually concerned on Tuesday that Newcastle may come straight for Irvine with him having worked there for a number of years and now experienced management. The Moyes link just doubles the concerns...

HOWEVER I think Moyes has too much sense to jump at Newcastle and he'll wait for Celtic to become available again.(but the lack of money / new contract signing at Goodison by him and the ground rebuild hassle does make for nervous times).

Lets start a Shearer for Newcastle campaign

Got to agree with you Tom - I think Parkin may be withdrawn for the last 15 minutes (if we are winning) to allow Brown a bit of a run out to test his injury and to start getting some fitness, otherwise he will be replaced by Hawley IMO. We are starting to look a solid outfit but have my concerns about Youl, he needs to start cutting out his mistakes as they are going to cause us problems.

Agree with Tom in being worried, but that's the price a club the size of PNE has to pay for success. If only someone had come in for Paul Simpson when we were top of the Championship last season.. if only.

It could be nervous times for us with Irvine.

He has a fantastic reputation in football already having worked with lots of people in teh game but his recent impression at Management will just harden some people's impression of him that he is a person who goes about his job with a quiet authority and has no agenda other than winning football matches.

You just don't get the impression with him that he likes to be on TV or is in it for the money. He is a football man through and through and i am sure will want to go as afar as he can in the game.

Problem is he has worked for Rovers, Newcastle and Everton. If Incey Wincey Sprider, Moyes ort even someone like Megson at Bolton was to get the boot would they want to go for Irvine because of the way he has taken to Management like a duck to water?

Time will tell and we can only fully support him as best we can and see how far he goes with us.

I don't think we should be worried about Irvine just yet, if we have a good season then I might start to get a bit twitchy. As for the team to play Cov agree with Tom.

I've been impressed by the form Sedge has been showing particularly on Saturday when he consistently beat his man despite his lack of pace. Hopefully AL showed Whaley the video to make him pull his finger out!!!

Sedge has certainly knuckled down. There is no way he can be left out at the moment. Our last 3 goals have come from Sedgey on the right.
