Football fans could soon be catching shuttle buses to Preston North End's Deepdale in an attempt to cut congestion on match days.
Bus firm Stagecoach is planning to set up a new service to ferry supporters from the bus station to Preston North End.

The Footyrider service aims to reduce the number of spectators travelling by car and clogging up residential streets around Deep
dale.

The plans have been backed by Ben Rhodes, general manager of PNE, who said: "We understand the frustration of local residents and we are trying to encourage supporters who drive to the game to change their habits.

"We also want to remove the hassle for all our travelling supporters, whether they attend alone or with a family, by offering a safe and reliable transport service.

"We anticipate that a Footyrider service would be a very friendly and enjoyable method of travel, allowing PNE fans to get to the game together and reducing local congestion.

"By leaving the car at home, fans are also helping the environment and saving money on parking and petrol. It is hoped that the Footyrider service, which will cost £2 for a return trip, will be up and running in time for PNE's first Championship home game against Crystal Palace on August 16.

Rob Jones, operations manager at Stagecoach North-West, said: "We fully appreciate the congestion issues caused by cars on match day and we are committed to alleviating the situation for local residents.

"We believe that a £2 return journey, with an already increased frequency of service around the city, will encourage people to leave their vehicles at home."

Deepdale councillor Terry Cartwright said residents had been plagued with parking problems during big match days.

He said: "It will be a really big plus if it means they are putting on more buses.

"If there are more buses on match day, then it's better all round."

This is a good idea, myself i have always left the car at home, caught the bus to Preston, and walked down Deepdale rd,for the last 32 years. The walk down to the ground adds to the enjoyment of match days.It is a heaving throng for the locals, but it is for a few hours only, but then again i don't have to live there!Any ideas to create harmony with residents and club is always worth looking at.

Travel in car from Chorley, park car on bus station car park, catch bus to ground. Total cost £6 approx.

Travel to ground from Chorley, park in street. £1.50 approx.

Sorry bad idea.

I think that they've missed the point as the majority of car users who park at the ground don't live in and around the city centre. It sounds to me like a token gesture to put Councillor Cartwright back in his box. If they were really serious about reducing congestion then they'd get a bus service to the ground running from all the park and rides on the outskirts of the city.

more pr for stage coach. prston bus already "run buses around the city"-stagecoach speak. the preston bus no 19 service leaves the bus station every 5 minutes monday to saturday serving north end. for years preston bus. fishwicks and stagecoach have run football specials. you must have drugged terry cartwright for his quote. terry would rather climb in his coffin than get on a stagecoach bus.
