Aberdeen star Barry Nicholson helped crush Glasgow Rangers' title hopes on Thursday night and then flashed a message to Preston North End: "Come and get me!"
The midfielder is heading for England as a free agent, with PNE reported to be one of the favourites to land him.

But after playing a key role in the Dons' 2-0 win over Walter Smith's side at Pittodrie, Nicholson said: "I'm just waiting on a decent offer now."

The 29-year-old schemer has been linked with several clubs south of the border since rejecting a new deal at Aberdeen and announcing he wanted to try his hand in the English game.

Preston, Plymouth Argyle, newly-promoted Nottingham Forest and relegated Leicester City have all been named as suitors by the Scottish media.

But up to last night no one had made a firm offer for a player who has arguably been the Dons' best player this season in the SPL and the UEFA Cup.

"At this stage I don't know where I will be going," said Nicholson, whose agent is Kenny Moyes, brother of Everton boss David.

"There are a few clubs interested. But there is nothing concrete yet. I'm hoping to get a chance to try things down south and my agent Kenny has been speaking to a number of clubs.

"But I haven't committed myself to a pre-contract or anything like that. Clubs are probably waiting to make their final plans. I think the play-off situation is holding a few clubs back just now.

"I'm not getting too impatient with it at the moment. But obviously I desperately want to get something sorted out.

"I'm looking to try and get things tied up before I go on holiday at the end of May."

Dead-ball specialist Nicholson created Aberdeen's opening goal against Rangers last night when his free-kick picked out Lee Miller and his header beat keeper Neil Alexander.

The central midfielder was then given a standing ovation when he was substituted two minutes from time.

He revealed he was not expecting to land a contract with a Premier League club in England.

"There were a couple of things mentioned abroad," he said. "But I think it is going to be more likely the Championship, or clubs in the top end of League One."

it's a few more strikers that are required, defence is sound, midfield is ok, who knows yet what strikers like mellor will be head hunted in the summer and as Irvine says hopefully there wont be any interest in his players but if the price is right who knows!!!!

Get Nicholson in and let McKenna go, in my opinion. Midfield is nowhere near sorted yet, there's only Chaplow in there can create anything.

TPL - I strongly disagree our midfield is Ok!Yes our defence is sound, more than sound, one of the best if not the best in the division, quality and cover on the left on the right and in the middle, and with a terrific goalie as well. but midfield wise we are weak, Whaley is talented but hit and miss (although we do need to keep him) as we have no other wingers that can threaten a goal. Carter has improved and played a good role but will never dominate proceedings, McKenna hasnt even scored this season, Chaplow (jurys still out) and Nicholls will probably go anyway. Segde or Lewis Neal are game players but we need a bit more than that sometimes. Of course we do need at least one if not 2 strikers and if we lose Mellor we could be in real trouble. I would be gutted if we lose him, it's rare for a player that not long ago fans groaned when he came on, now he is the star man!

Old8oy, how about get Nicholson and pair him up with Mckenna, 2 great crossers of the ball, both can hold the ball. Now that will be a defence busting partnership.

Get Nicholson because since we lost both Alexander and Lewis we no longer have a dead ball specialist. Nicholson fits the bill. Get him!

We do look weak from set pieces. Can Nicholson take a corner, too? I was at Charlton, and we had countless corners. They were woeful. Either straight to the keeper, or straight out of play. If we had the old McKenna, David, then I'd certainly agree with you. But from what I saw of him last season (games in the South, mainly), he is well past his best. Can only pass sideways, gives the ball away too much, and scared to shoot half the time. Not been the same since his injury. Thanks for the memories, Paul...but I think it's time to go.

I have been one of McKenna's biggest critics this year, however.....
He came into a squad devoid of any confidence at a time when we were awful. We all expected big things of him, to change the way we were playing. HE WAS UNFIT. We all saw that, we all knew that. If he, along with Whalley and a few others, have a proper pre-season, playing on grass pitches in competitive matches, I am sure he will get back to the sort of form that made him PFA player of the season for our division 2/3 years ago. Irvine will work these players hard and will sort them out. Give him time gentlemen!!!
