Preston North End boss Alan Irvine insists a transfer breakthrough could be just around the corner, and has been linked with Charlton Athletic defender Jonathan Fortune.
The Deepdale manager has been having a frustrating time after making just one signing all summer.

But a week after he travelled to the South of England to talk to one target – believed to be Charlton defender Jonathan Fortune – he told the Evening Post: "I've got a couple of plates spinning at the moment.

"Sadly we just don't seem able to complete anything just at this moment.

"There are a couple of things that could drop into place at any time.

Equally, they might never happen. It's just a case of waiting and hoping."

Aberdeen midfielder Barry Nicholson on a free transfer remains Irvine's only success so far.

>> Irvine still unsure of best side

Irvine has a central defender as his top priority now after Neal Trotman joined Liam Chilvers on the casualty list following more hernia surgery.

Irvine is also keen to bring in cover on the left-hand side of midfield with Lewis Neal the only recognised left-winger on the books.

But with Chris Sedgwick showing on Saturday against Morecambe that he is just as comfortable on that side as on the right – he had a hand in all three of North End's goals at Christie Park – the urgency there is not so strong.

Irvine was satisfied with the team performance against the Shrimps, although he insisted the final score should have been greater than 3-0.

Sean St Ledger, Karl Hawley and Neil Mellor put Preston out of sight within the first 23 minutes.

Irvine said: "It was a very good workout. I thought we started the game very well but it was difficult for the lads to get up to that level again in the second half.

"The fact that we made so many substitutions (nine) after the break probably disrupted things.

"The only disappointing thing for me was we didn't take many of the other chances we created. It could and it should have been more.

"But we are only halfway through pre-season and there are still things we need to look at.

"I am delighted with what we have done overall. Morecambe was another step up for us and we got through without injuries, so I have to be delighted."

Its looking good. I got the feeling I had under Billy D, when we won regular. I feel PNE can upset the odds this time round. Still be happy with Top 10, But im saving for the Playoffs :)

David C, this is the squad that was nowhere near good enough last season. AI is clearly a cut above Simpson but he will need to have a magician's wand to transform this bunch into Top 10; some are stale, some are complacent, some just nowhere near good enough.
Remember how poor their attitude was at times last season?
Remember how they did just enough to be safe, then tailed off markedly again?
Mid-table at best unless we can shift some of the dead wood and find a goalscorer who can thrive on the few chances we create.
Thankfully, the lashers and Donny will take up two of the relegation spots so we should be able to avoid the drop, but it will be close. And if Mckenna and Sedgwick are automatic choices again . . . God help us!
look at the teams strengthening and the new teams in the division and talk of play-offs/promotion is ludicrous sadly...

It's been said before, so il say it again to shut dale up.

This squad from january 1st to the end of the season would of finished second in the league. AND we had the hardest run in of all teams, that tells me this squad is already good for a top 6, so dale stop being so negative.

My Dale.. your glass is definitely half empty isnt it?!.. I personally think that we have a good a squad now as we did under the Davies era. The difference this season is that AI has got them fit & will leave no stone unturned to get 100% out of the squad. A vast difference to the slap dash methods of Simmo.. Yes, new additions are required, & I trust In AI to bring them in & for a very good season ahead. I'm not going to get ahead of myself & predict play offs, promotion just yet. But I confidently predict that we will be spending most of our time towards the top end of the table rather than near the bottm

Dale you make some good points there are still a number of players who are not up to the task eg Hawley,Ormerod, they need to be moved on and replaced by 2 quality strikers otherwise the best we can hope for is mid table.

Dale think before you type next time.

bexy54 hawley, ormerod are back up players who wont be in the 16 alot of the time.

We have a goalscorer in Mellor who will hit 20 plus next season and brown who will provide at least 10.

In chaplow carter whaley all got at least 5 to 10 goals in them each.

This season is looking good and i will put money down on top 6.

Im not worried by the lack of transfers as yet id rather sign quality than panick buy. And Jonathon Fortune would be a good signing.

GET BEHIND THE WHITES
