Alan Irvine has summed up Preston North End's best start for nine years in one word – belief.
The Deepdale boss took stock after three wins in the opening week of the new season and declared: "It has been a fantastic beginning for us.

"Everyone is feeling really good about themselves.

"They were feeling good as a result of a very good pre-season and this has simply reinforced that.

"The lads believe in what we did in pre-season, they believe in themselves and in what they are doing for each other.

"There is a great deal of optimism about the place after such a good start.

"But that's all it is, a start."

North End now have a clear week to prepare for the visit to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Victory there would make it four out of four – the club's best start since 1933.

But they will have to go to Hillsborough without their most experienced player, full-back Callum Davidson.

The 32-year-old had a scan on his left knee last night and Preston are
anxiously awaiting the results.

Davidson made the trip to Scotland on Sunday to report to national team boss George Burley ahead of the Northern Ireland friendly at Hampden Park on Wednesday, even though he has no chance of playing.

He was checked out by the Scots' medical team before returning south.
Irvine explained: "He went up there just to make sure that everyone in
Scotland knew that he was keen to be involved.

"It was his decision to go up and show his face.

"He didn't want anyone thinking he was pulling out lightly."

Davidson was called up last week after a six-year absence from the inter-national scene and is now hoping his injury clears up in plenty of time to be involved for the opening World Cup qualifiers next month.

Preston are keeping their fingers crossed that a provisional diagnosis by their own medics proves correct and the problem is not long-term.

For more from Alan Irvine, pick up a copy of Tuesday's Lancashire Evening Post.

Can't see any reason why we can't win at Hillsborough. Must admit, and there is a very good reason why over the years of being a North End fan, that as soon as I get optimistic and excited that a decent run is there to be had, they go and smack it straight out of the water and it comes crashing down around me. Thats not pesimism or defeatist, just a fear of history repeating. However, I don't feel now. I did on Saturday, thinking, it would be North End all over to open the new stand on a defeat... but I was wrong and a solid confident performance instead. Don;t believe in miracle workers, but I think that under Irvine, "There is a great deal of optimism about the place after such a good start." Not just for the players or backroom staff, but for the fans as well. Could this really be our year???

Going to Hillsborough on Sat. Think another win is in our sights. But just in case I've prayed to St Jude(patron saint of hopeless cases) I've got a four leaf clover. Sleep with a rabbit! Not sadistic enough to hack off its foot.Rub my Buddha every day.Never walk under a ladder and I'm the proud owner of a big balck cat.

Like a constant of nature, I've always been resigned to PNE being poor starters - just as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, North End dont't seem to get going until the first leaf of Autumn falls to the ground. Upsetting the norm and fooling the natural way of things would be very nice indeed. Please.

Leacock isnt first choice in a Derby defence that let in nearly 90 goals last season and Big Claude? remember his performance against us in the cup last year? hilarious. If they aren't good enough for Derby then why would we want them. Idb rather have the lad at charlton, Fortune I think hes called.

Big Claude WAS good for us. Now he has been shot to pieces in a very poor Derby side. Why bang on about bringing old players back? If that is the case, wonder what Andy Fensome and Gavin Nebbeling are up to?

As Alan has proved, different managers can get players doing different things. Just coz they was rubbish at Derby doesn't mean to say that Alan couldn't get the player back on track they year. As long as the player coming in doesn't upset the balance of the side and ruin team moral, then I can't see why we can't trust Mr Irvine. I remember negative comments about Hart and Nicoholson.

Agree David C, Alan has proved it 100%, just don't see what good it would do bringing back former players. Anywho, love speculation and all that on here, did anyone see pnevital saying we missed out on a non league striker Tom Denton?
