Preston North End suffered their first defeat of the pre-season programme, an early goal giving David Moyes' Everton victory at Deepdale.
But boss Alan Irvine will have been far from downhearted about his side's performance against their Premier League opponents.

Click here to replay our live match chat.

They enjoyed long spells of possession in front of a crowd of 10,322, with summer signing Barry Nicholson particularly impressive in his role on the right-hand side of midfield.

It was only the lack of a cutting edge up front which was missing from their play, something Irvine is trying to rectify with a dip into the transfer market.

And that striker search may intensify if a first-half injury to Chris Brown proves anything more worrying than a painful knock on the ankle.

Phil Jagielka scored the game's only goal in the eighth minute, the former Sheffield United midfielder meeting Jose Baxter's right-wing corner with a powerful header from close range.

North End responded with Nicholson, skipper Paul McKenna and Brown all having chances before half-time, though none troubled Toffees keeper Iain Turner.

The second half, disjointed by a raft of substitutions, again saw Irvine's men on the front foot as they chased an equaliser, Neil Mellor having a penalty appeal turned down in the 49th minute when he appeared to be clipped by Jagielka.

Karl Hawley shot over with a first-time shot at the near post after good work by Michael Hart on the right carved out the opening, and the striker also saw a late looping header bounce on to the top of the net.

North End keeper Andy Lonergan was rarely called into action, his one save being to fingertip Andy Van Der Meyde's dipping drive over the bar.

Preston: Lonergan, Hart, St Ledger, Mawene, Davidson, McKenna, Chaplow, Nicholson, L Neal, Ormerod, Brown. Subs: C Neal, Mellor, Jones, Whaley, Hawley, Carter, Anyinsah, Sedgwick.

Everton: Turner, Neville, Rodwell, Lescott, Valente, Van Der Meyde, Jagielka, Gosling, Jutkiewitz, Agard, Baxter. Subs: Riddy, Arteta, O'Kane, Molyneux, Sinnott, Irving.

Referee: Graham Sailsbury (Preston).

good result... should put some realism into the hype and help to temper expectations.

Winning AT HOME in early season is difficult because players haven't really worked on team patterns and attacking options. This will also be Ipswich's problem on Aug 9th.

I don't think Alan Irvine could be anything but pleased with the performance. We controlled the game and our passing was superb - return balls, nice little triangles - and something we never witnessed under Paul Simpson when a patient return ball to create space was almost a sin and the ball was hoofed up the pitch at the earliest opportunity. It could easily have been 1-1 with a definite penalty for a foul on Mells. We won't always come up against international defenders of the calibre of Jagielka, Lescott, and Neville. Don't forget we won this fixture last year - then look what happened. I'm confident we'll do well this season on that showing. Cheers all.

1st point - it wasn't a good result against a heavily depleted Everton side.

2nd point - it doesn't matter. RevKeith is pretty much on the money in saying we won't have worked too much on attacking shape yet and as Roy David points out we beat them last season and started the season poorly. We won't really know how we're looking till we play Crewe away.

McKenna looked like he was back to his best ! Ive not witnessed him play as good as that 4 long time ! Even after the defeat I,m feeling more confident over PNE compared to this time last year !

Actually guys, we drew 1-1 last season, after a whaley goal was cancelled late on by anichebe.
Secondly, neither team fielded their 1st choice 11 (Father Ted has already pointed out that he hasn't decided his 1st team yet), and so a 1-0 loss to premiership opposition in a game that we (for the most part) controlled is a decent result for a friendly.

We're perhaps a creative striker away from comfortable wins but for the most part, there was a lot to be happy about. I think we showed a lot of attacking possession during today’s game and the midfield and defence showed plenty of shape going forward.

talk about no cutting edge, but then again against a full international back line, so its fine, improvement is needed, hope brown int cripled.

rev keith ." you say the team has not worked on team patterns and attcking options ? yes you have figured it out .perhaps you can figure thyis out .you play the blind you score eleven and each time after that acording as to how much the opponent can see youn score less until you start loosing .We have no decent scoring threats against opponents that see . that is why you stated the team have not worked on attacking options .what are they ? We dont have enough to stay up
