PNE striker impresses in loan deal

Karl Hawley has agreed to spend a second month on loan in League One hoping he can impress Preston North End manager Alan Irvine better from afar than at home.
The striker turned matchwinner when he notched his second goal in six games for Northampton Town at the weekend.

And he has volunteered to extend his stay at the Sixfields Stadium assuming both clubs can rubber-stamp the deal today.

Hawley has slipped down the pecking order at PNE following the arrival of first Jon Parkin and then Stephen Elliott.

The 26-year-old last started a league game for North End in mid-April and was only getting as near as the substitutes' bench this season when the Cobblers asked to loan him.

So he jumped at the chance of regular first-team football in the hope that, with Irvine and his backroom team keeping a close eye on how he fares, it could put him back in the frame at PNE.

Four weeks on, manager Stuart Gray has been mightily impressed with the former Carlisle frontman and admits he is desperate to hang on to him for at least another month.

"I would like to keep Karl here for a bit longer," he said.

"Karl wants to stay here and I am certain he will be available for us for our game against Yeovil on Saturday."

Hawley has made a significant impact at Northampton, not only scoring twice in the month but also helping fellow strikers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Leon Constantine.

fartalotlotmore,

Found his level ?
It would be like many before him ......
At least the lad's a tryer, can't be faulted on genuine enthusiasm, unlike some.

he'll be back at deepdale and will get another chance, I am sure. Hawley did well and he's a striker we missing, someone willing to take on defenders.

Sounds like he has found his level, perhaps we should be cashing in on him so more funds can be made available for emergency striker loans to be made permanent in the new year.

Is Hawley one of the men that was hinted at being moved out?

I personally don't think Hawley is good enough for the Championship, I was at the Northampton game on Friday and was pleased to see him play half decent, he's formed a good partnership upfront. But from seeing him last and this season for PNE he is not good enough for the Championship, he lacks pace and doesn't gamble on flick ons enough. He's got a good touch and can shield the ball well, and in League one he'll get more shots off and more goals than at PNE.

Agree with Andy26 and fartalotmore. He is at his level and hes is a tryer. I hope they can make it permanent because it sounds like he has settled there. Good luck Karl

On a numerous occasions i have seen Hawley in preston town centre absolutely smashed, arguing with bouncers and subway staff, bring him back for comedy purposes

I hope he does well up there and they want to keep him, and if not then maybe other clubs in div 1 will look at Hawley because at his level he is a good finisher but not what is required at our level, good luck Hawley and may the deal be made permanent or if not i hope you get a chance in the lower divisions where you ave an impact

some of this is a bit harsh on Hawley. He is pretty much like the other strikers we have at the club....honest and reasonably effective...but unlikely to fire us to where we want to be. I was about to say unlike Fuller and Nuge, but then neither did they!! I think a fit Brown will be key to our chances this season, but I do miss a striker that gets me on the edge of my seat...will have to make do with Sedge's ball wizardry instead...and I jest not...at least the man Sedge never hides and actually wants the ball..Sedge 4 the Belarus trip.

It's weird how some players are able to progress through the divisions gradually, and keep finding their feet. Someone like Ian Ashbee (sp?) at Hull who has stayed with the Tigers from League 2 to the Prem, or even Ryan Kidd who went through 3 divisions smoothly with us. Yet other players can excel at one level but are just unable to make the transition to the next - Andy Saville being a classic example for PNE

Nice to see Karl Hawley, his mum and his gran have made an input to the vote of the week!!! He has scored 2 goals in 6 games for Northampton - not a great return really. BYE
