Preston North End have secured their first silverware of the new season.

The club's fans' team were crowned world champions at the IFA WorldNet tournament in Leeds, after fighting off the challenge of 63 other teams from all over the globe.
PNE dispatched Nottingham Forest, Gillingham and York in the group stages to progress into the knockout rounds on the second day of the competition.

There they saw off Barnsley (2-0), Motherwell (2-1), Crystal Palace (2-0) and West Bromwich Albion (4-1) to qualify for the final against Watford.

In the final, they took the lead inside the opening minute through centre-forward George Pennington, and the score remained the same until five minutes left when the Hornets were awarded a penalty.

However, Danny Roccia saved the spot-kick and PNE were crowned champions.

Proud manager Steve Cowell said: "It's an unbelievable achievement.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would win this cup.

"But we got on a roll and just clicked. As the tournament progressed, we got stronger and stronger. The squad's blend was perfect, and for me, it's a once in a lifetime achievement as a manager.

"Fans came from everywhere to support us. There were scenes of mass celebration and when we lifted the trophy, all the other teams stayed to give us a standing ovation.

"I said to the lads in the team talk for the final to do it for themselves, their families, but most importantly for the shirt that they are wearing.

"It was a team effort, but George Pennington scored eight goals and was just unstoppable.

"Jason Dodwell won the man-of-the-match in the final – he had ripped West Bromwich apart in the semi-final and then did the same against Watford."

The team received generous applause when they paraded the trophy around Deepdale during half-time in the game against Everton on Tuesday.

Tom Harrison,

I was absolutely delighted when i heard this the other day.

I know a lot of teh boys who play in the fans team and they are all die hard northenders. They have spent the best part of teh last 3-4 years travelling up and down the UK on matchdays at daft o'clock to play teams like Plymouth Away etc. I have also had the pleasure of featuring for them on a couple of occasions and the craic is fantastic.

They all deserve this award immensely and a massive shout out must go out to Steve Cowell who organises everything for teh lads from matches, kit, accomodation and everything. He has also been involved in a lot of fundraising and donated a lot to the recent charity game at Preston College.

What a way to go out Steve in your final year as Player Manager. Who knows maybe he will be PNE Manager one day???!!!!!!!!

Congratulations boys let's hope PNE can match you this term.

spot on Tom !

You mention the "other day". It was running from Friday to Sunday, and included teams from Arsenal, Man Utd, Inter Milan and a team from Nigeria. Shame the news is on just filtering through, although PNE Official Website reported it on Monday (of course).

A friend of mine, in the Bristol area, playing in the veterans 32 team competition for a Birmingham City fans team (as opposed to the 64 teams that PNE competed in) and he was also very complementary about the football programme that the PNE fans team created, with every player registered being given a mention.

Total Respect and great kudos for Preston !
