PNE fans angry over football stewards

Angry Preston North End fans are calling for "heavy-handed" stewards to get sacked following Saturday's game at Plymouth Argyle.
Fans claim security staff at Home Park put supporters at risk by man-handling them. PNE said it has received several complaints which it has vowed to raise with the Devon club.

One PNE fan, Greg Winders, 24, who lives in St Dominic, Cornwall, was at the Championship league game with his family.

He said unrest started half an hour into the game in the Barn Park end when a Preston supporter was "violently grabbed" and wrestled to the ground.

Mr Winders said: "The fan's only crime was standing up and singing. The resulting struggle led to three more stewards including an orange jacketed supervisor getting involved and dragging the fan kicking through the other supporters. It was quite shocking for people who were around there including children.

"It put fans, including myself, in danger when there was no danger beforehand. It was generally poor stewarding from then on."

He said fans, including a child, ran to his row of seats for safety as supporters from both sides sang chants protesting against the stewards. Other fans have left messages online complaining about "out of control"
stewards, including claims one supporter was headbutted.

A Preston North End spokesman said: "We have had a few complaints and I am sure we will be contacting Plymouth Argyle to see if everything was in order."

A spokesman for Plymouth Argyle said: "I would urge any Preston fans, if they do have any complaints, to get in touch and we will deal with them."

Unfortunately, every city has a certain Neanderthal knuckle-dragging element and our club employs ours as stewards.

I dare say the PNE fans were not totally blameless but the PAFC stewards are always OTT.

what confused me was the stewards went to drag supporters out with unreasonable force, yet stewards arnt allowed to do that can only ask someone to leave, and the police who where there through out this just stood and watched.i just hope the 2 lancashire constabulary officers that where there who witnessed it stick to thered word and open a full inquiry and sack the stewards involved..

I emailed the Football League and they have passed it on. There is a problem at Deepdale and at Plymouth. I know I have seen first hand the problems at Deepdale and I have many family members that support Plymouth. The Incident at Plymouth is a strong stance at Fans standing, same as it is at deepdale. Even united have given up on the issue. All I can say is, if u want to stand, go to the back of the stands. And the clubs need to use common sence whilst they still got fans to get to sit down. THere are a few at the front at Deepdale that wantto stand, surely if fans are stud at the back in front of their own chair there shouldn#t be a problem. we all want standing area's back. But untill the clubs and the fans reach a middle ground, theres going to be these incidents. Again, PNE show take their Stewards to Derby for training, were stewards ask you to sit, allow those at the back to stand, have a smokers gateat half-time, they have everything spot on which hasx resulted, in Fans staying faithful after the season they have had.

I can't agree more with the Preston fans comments. Our stewards are appalling, they are aggressive and intimidating.
However this all changes when there is a large travelling support, fans can then stand all through the game if they want to.
I travel fairly frequently with the Green Army and have never come across stewards as bad as at Home Park.

I've wrote a letter to Plymouth Argyle and also spoken to their ground safety manager Pete Bellamy (just as arrogant as the stewards) and he said that he feels it is a police matter and the club wouldn't be responding even though they state in there customer charter on the website that all complaints will be acknowledged within fourteen days.

Just shows that they don't care as long as there seen to maintain crowd control even though there was no aggravation between fans and stewards until they started being violent to those congregating at the top of the stand!

I've read a few comments about the Plymouth stewards on a number of websites and it does sounds like they over reacted. Hopefully this can be addressed however I don't agree with post #3 regarding home stewards. From where I sit there seems to be a large number of North End fans that stand at the back of the Bill Shankley and i've never seen them being told to sit down.

There's another article on this on this web link http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A34870601

It seems as though this is a serious and increasing problem and one that Plymouth need to resolve and now.

Sam look again, we've had fans thrown down the stand, one draged out because the inflatable landed track side. I agree with them getting fans to sit down, but 3 tueday night games, with no police back up, the stewards have tried the heavey "u will sit down" approach. I agree they not as bad as the Plymouth fans but our GSO has upset a lot of fans this season. The Standing area debate is growing and it will continue for many years, because football just isn't the same sat down. (I do sit, don't get a choice)

I'm that appalled by the stewarding I've written quite a bit on the 606 forum and on the LEP match report for the game. Also on BBC 606 as Man of Reason

I have also written to the Chairman of Plymouth Argyle.
