Preston North End chairman Derek Shaw today insisted he would be 'foolish' not to consider Darren Ferguson as a potential successor to sacked boss Alan Irvine.
Irvine, 51, was surprisingly shown the door yesterday despite saving the Lancashire outfit from relegation in 2007/08 and guiding them into the play-offs last season.

Shaw is now focused on finding a successor and admits the highly-rated Ferguson - currently a free agent after leaving Peterborough in November - is on his radar.

Shaw said on Tuesday afternoon: "I have received literally dozens and dozens of phone calls from people in and outside of the game expressing an interest in the job.

"We will look at all our options very carefully and then go through the formal application and interview process.

"There's a few experienced managers out of work at the moment and there's one or two up and coming managers that we know about as well."

Asked if Ferguson fell within that latter group, Shaw replied: "Yes, of course. Darren Ferguson did a fantastic job at Peterborough so he's obviously in the frame.

"We would be foolish not to consider him but there are several quality candidates out there and we've not spoken to anybody just yet."

Ferguson is likely to favour the vacant managerial position at Bolton after Gary Megson was unseated today.

Paul Jewell, Steve Cotterill and Jim Gannon would then lead the race to succeed Irvine at Deepdale.

Shaw added: "We'll go about our business quietly and efficiently because all the publicity surrounding Darren Ferguson when he left Peterborough was like an episode of the Muppet Show."

Shaw, whose decision to axe Irvine has attracted criticism from Preston fans, has placed Rob Kelly in caretaker charge ahead of this weekend's FA Cup tie at home to Colchester.

If Ferguson was like an episode of the muppet show, Irvines was like an episode of the chuckle brothers!

I have being hearing a lot of rumours about a Takeover, is this 'pie in the sky' or is there some truth in the matter. I've heard that Uncle Trevor is going to take over and Curbishley is going to come in, also heard about Shearer. Can't see it myself, but I hope it's true so Shaw can walk the Green Mile.

Just changing the subject, with Portsmouth being issued a winding up order, does that mean we'll lose out on any money owed us for the Nugent deal?

NO NO NO MR.SHAW

Do not repeat past mistakes. Darren Ferguson as done well in lower divisions just like Paul Simpson did.

What we need is a proven Championship Manager.

If you are thinking Sir Alex will help him out with loans etc.think again.
Sir Alex loyalty is to Man U.... as may full stops as you like.

lets face facts, as much as we'd all wish that trevor hemmings or his son takes over it isnt going to happen. he could have done it many times in the past with excellent managers like moyes and best of all davies. davies might have left a sour taste but deep down we all know given the money irvine recieved we would have romped this league.he speaks his mind yes but has ambition and gets the job done...cue his exit.

Will Darren Ferguson be any better than Alan Irvine? I think not. Wasn't he sacked from Peterborough? Its just a managerial merry go round that we would be better not being on. I have the feeling that this decision, rather helping to avoid relegation, might just precipitate it. It could DSs final gesture.
