Preston North End will face Paul Jewell's Derby County in the second round of the Carling Cup.
Preston, fallers at the first fence in four of the five previous seasons, safely negotiated a potential banana skin on Tuesday night against Chesterfield.

Having coasted through the first half to lead with a 37th-minute strike from Neil Mellor, Irvine's side were given a couple of frights late on before the ex-Liverpool striker wrapped things up with his second in stoppage time.

Derby will visit Deepdale in the week commencing August 25.

Meanwhile, Roy Keane will be looking for a second win in as many months over former club Nottingham Forest after Sunderland were drawn against the Championship newcomers.

The cup clash comes hot on the heels of a pre-season friendly between the sides, and the Black Cats manager would accept a repeat of the 1-0 scoreline at the City Ground.

Premier League teams not involved in Europe were put into the draw after last night's first-round matches, with several being handed potentially awkward ties to be played later this month.

Newcastle will be away to Coventry, top-flight newcomers Hull go to Swansea and Middlesbrough must tackle Coca-Cola League One Yeovil at home.

Elsewhere Hartlepool host West Brom, Macclesfield have a trip to West Ham and Manchester City - who qualified for the UEFA Cup due to their disciplinary record but are not exempt from second-round duties - face a long trip to Brighton.

Blackburn will be at home to Grimsby, Wigan will welcome Notts County and Fulham host Leicester. Bolton have a home tie against Northampton.

The matches will be played in the week commencing August 25 except Manchester City, due to their European commitments.

Birmingham will play Southampton, with Blues boss Alex McLeish confident new signing Quincy Owusu-Abeyie can lend his side a new dimension.

McLeish last night saw the former Arsenal man, who has moved to St Andrews on loan from Spartak Moscow until the New Year, roll home a nonchalant side-footed effort with four minutes to go against Wycombe despite lacking full match fitness.

It was a cameo which gave the former Scotland boss plenty of hope.

Mehdi Nafti, Sebastian Larsson and Cameron Jerome were also on the scoresheet but it was Quincy who caught his manager's eye.

``It was a great finish from Quincy and he proved in the time he had on the pitch that he has got plenty of skill and pace,'' McLeish said.

``He's a very lively player and will be even better once we get him fit to play 90 minutes.

``He wants to be a big player for us and hopefully he will be."

Also last night, Forest beat Morecambe 4-0 to book their reunion with Keane, Coventry eased past league newcomers Aldershot 3-1 and Sheffield United eliminated Port Vale with a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane.

You have to fancy us against any team at Home and hopefully Derby won't have gotten into their stride by then.

If we can dispatch them then we can possibly look for a money spinning tie in the third round against a big boy that will be a successful cup run in my opinion. However, if we can get past Derby and get draws at home against winnable opponents then who knows how far we can go????

Look at Cardiff in teh FA Cup last year? I would love a day out at Wembley with PNE and bringing home our first bit of silverware since the Div 2 Championship.

If Wigan can get to the final of the league cup, then there's no reason why we can't either.

we win 1 game against Chesterfield and people are already thinking we could get to the final. somehow i don't think so. we won't get very far in this cup or the F.A. think realistic we have a though season in the championship this year.

am i not correct in thinking e were having a bad season last year and still only just got knocked out by Premiership Portsmouth. thing with cups is they are knockout and if you happen to have the luck and form on the day you can beat anyone. even top teams have been knocked out by lower league clubs. No reason we cant do it.
if we played Man U 10 times chances are we might win one. The thing with cups is that one has to be that day.

I'm not saying were not a better team. just were not going to be carling cup champions 2009, beacuse we beat chesterfield and we have derby in the second round ! we got beat to barnsley when they were in a lower divison and we still ended up in the playoffs. the cup has little affect on the league performance !
