Preston North End have moved to strengthen their threadbare defence by signing Republic of Ireland Under-21 skipper Eddie Nolan on loan from neighbours Blackburn Rovers.
The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a three-month stay at Deepdale on Monday night after passing a routine medical – and then jetted straight off to Dublin to prepare for his Ireland B debut on Thursday.

North End revealed the player has signed with a view to a permanent deal in the January transfer window.

"Let's just see how it goes and whether the club like me," Nolan told the Lancashire Evening Post.

"I'm here until January and I'm hoping to play some first- team football during that time. Then we will see what's happening after that."

>>PNE boss holds fire on loan move

Nolan is a centre-half who can also operate at right-back – a position he has played on loan with both Stockport and Hartlepool in the past 18 months.

Boss Alan Irvine has been tracking the youngster for some time after being impressed with him in reserve-team football for Rovers.

Preston say they were already negotiating to land the 6ft 1in Irishman before the recent injury crisis which has left the club with just four fit defenders.

"He is a young player who has got potential," said Irvine. "He has a good pedigree.

"We will see how things are between now and January to see whether we take it on further. We are looking at Eddie with an eye on the future.

"He isn't necessarily someone who is going to solve our problems right at this moment. People shouldn't look at him as someone who is going to get into the first team at this moment."

I for one am going to congratulate the Manager and Chairman because in the last year whenever they have identified a need for new players then they have done the work to bring them to Deepdale. They may not be the high profile players many supporters want but they demand wages we cannot afford.I am happy with the process of building slowly, it is the only way with our financial position.

Sounds like he is another exciting prospect. Premiership experience - albeit 1 match - Irish international. Lets hope he fulfills that potential and helps take us to the promised land. If any one can improve him I am sure Al can.

Well done Al and Derek - how many of you spotted this one coming?

Alan Irvine obviously took note of the vote on which position is PNE's top priority in the loan market.

Not wanting to rain on the parade but McEveley & Carter have Premiership experience and all I hear at games is negative about them!
I trust Irvine that this is a good long term signing BUT if it really is one for the future then the problem remains in lack of competition for places at the back. And it needs sorting.

Sounds like a reason to be cheerful to me, but we will never win the happiest fans contest.

Given that we had four defenders available he must provide some competition for places. If he is good enough he is old enough, and if it makes the other defenders look over their shoulder it is a good move.

Well Done Derek and Alan

Yes well done everybody! Well done LEP for telling us that Irvine was hanging fire on loan signings just yesterday. Well done Trevor W and Bolwhite for saying well done and putting all those doubting Toms in their place. Well done on signing Parkin coz he makes me feel like an athlete still. Well done to me for saying well done in the midst of one of the poorest runs of results and performance despite it being blindingly obvious that the squad is too small and we have no cover apart from upfont. And well done the global banking system for just about everything else..

A tame Stockport fan (there are the odd one or two) says that he can't remember anything at about his spell there (2+2). Further research showed that it involved a 2-7 home defeat by Rochdale and the entire regretable business came flooding back. It was a while ago, do hope he's improved.

The story at Hartlepool, last season. He featured in 12 matches, 11 league, 1 FACup. This period yielded 2 victories, 3 draws, and 7 defeats. In the league out of 33 possible points they gathered 8 points only in his time there.
Like my old school reports - "could do better" ! He's young, reputedly fit, a body and very definitely better than nobody on the bench.
