Preston North End have completed the signing of striker Stephen Elliott from Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers, with PNE defender Matt Hill moving in the opposite direction.
Elliott joins the Lilywhites for an undisclosed fee and has penned a three-year deal at Deepdale.

Meanwhile Hill, 27, has joined Wanderers for an undisclosed fee after making over 100 appearances for the Lancashire outfit.

Preston manager Irvine has still not found the central defensive cover he had been looking for and will probably have to turn to the emergency loan market when that opens next week.

Striker Jon Parkin, who joined from Stoke on a temporary loan on Saturday just in time to play in the 2-1 win against Charlton, made the move permanent on Monday morning when he signed a three-year contract.

Irvine was delighted with the business he was able to do over the weekend, but he said: "I don't know yet if there will be any more, but we will keep trying.

"There are a couple of positions I would like to speak to the chairman about. To be fair, the chairman worked unbelievably hard on the Jon Parkin deal, so I owe him a lot of thanks for that."

Irvine admitted Parkin had been on his shopping list for some time but the deal had only become possible in the past few days.

"I have been trying to sign a big centre-forward since May," he said. "And I did get Jon in on the last weekend of the transfer window.

"It's madness. Everyone has been waiting and you will see a flurry of things now.

"Jon made a big difference to us on Saturday. Everyone could see the quality he has got.

"I have brought him here to help us continue to be a good footballing side, rather than for him to be a battering ram.

"He only got introduced to the lads as they were coming into the dressing room. Yet he fitted into the team very well."

Elliott watched from the Sir Tom Finney Stand as Preston beat Charlton to go second in the table on goal difference behind Wolves.

He has been on the transfer list at Molineux since May despite only having moved there a year ago from Sunderland.

I heard that Lewis Neal has put his house up for sale. That could mean he is on his way? I would also expect Ormerod and Jarrett being available. Maybe even Hawley? Other than that i wouldn;t expoect any other player to go unless we receive a very tempting offer However, i would not have thought SSL would be sold as we have no defenders left!!!!

I thought the Hill deal was Elliott PLUS £300k for Hilly not the other way round? Hill PLus £300k is that good business as Hill was rated at £1.5 12 months ago??!!

I would expect Elliott and 2 Defenders coming in today or today and then emergency loan for the defenders. Other than that i don't really think we need cover in Midfield now with the options we have. Maybe cover for Lonners to ensure he remains on his toes?

It is defensively we need to cover with 1 CB and cover at LB despite what peopel say about Hart i would prefer a left footed player as cover.

For all of you not in the know about the rules of the transfer window here goes..........

Premier League and SPL clubs now have until midnight on Monday, 1 September to sign players after the deadline was extended by 24 hours for the convenience of clubs as the previous date fell on a Sunday.

English Football League and Blue Square Premier (Conference National) clubs have the same deadline for full transfers, but not for loans. Clubs in the English non-league pyramid below the Blue Square Premier are not bound by the transfer window system.

After midnight on 1 September, Premier League and SPL clubs cannot sign any players, on loan or full transfers, until the next transfer window in the 2008/09 season opens on 1 January. This window will stay open until midnight on Monday, 1 February.

Clubs in the Football League can sign players on loan outside of the transfer windows, following a seven-day period after the transfer window closes.

Outside of the transfer windows, any club may still sign players on an emergency basis (such as if they had no goalkeepers available) with the permission of their competition's governing body, ie the Premier League.

Players who are out of contract and do not have a club, can be signed outside of the transfer window if they are unattached free agents when the window closes.
