Alan Irvine's first pre-season as a boss has been pretty frustrating in terms of strengthening the Preston North End squad.
But as he waits patiently – and probably sometimes impatiently – for things to fall into place, Irvine can at least reflect with some satisfaction at the promise being shown by his single close-season capture.

He snapped Barry Nicholson up on a Bosman from Aberdeen, the Scotland international keen to try his hand in the English game.

And the 29-year-old's early performances suggest Irvine has found a good one, a real addition to the midfield.

Nicholson caught the eye in last night's friendly with Everton which David Moyes' side won thanks to an early goal as North End switched off at a corner.

Playing tucked in on the right side of midfield, he linked up play extremely well and was behind a lot of the hosts' best attacking play.

Unfortunately, Irvine's men lacked a cutting edge in front of him, none of the four strikers on show looking particularly menacing.

Press the play button above to hear Alan Irvine talk about Barry Nicholson.

So however neat and tidy the build-up play was, more often than not it was Everton centre-backs Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka coming out on top against Chris Brown and Brett Ormerod, and later Neil Mellor and Karl Hawley.

Sharpness up front is an area Irvine intends addressing as the big kick-off gets nearer, one he acknowledges needs working on.

But concentrating on the positives of last night's game, played in front of a healthy 10,322 crowd, it was Nicholson's performance which delighted the PNE boss.

Irvine said: "Barry is a good footballer, very intelligent and technical, and I think the fans will be pleased with him.

"He is a hard-working lad who is desperate to do well here, and is going to add something to our squad, there is no doubt about that.

"You will have seen last night that Barry is not a right-wing type of midfield player.

"If you look at the top teams they have players who play in little areas where it's hard for the other team to deal with them.

"Barry can get the ball into areas where it is hard for the opposition to touch him."

was it just me or did Brown look flat before he got injured, thought we kept possession very well but the cutting edge was missing, Hart and Nicholson obviously have a good understanding. When was the last time we attacked a corner like theres and scored though?

yes i thought brown looked off but oooo well we all have off days i thought mckenna stood out a mile looks back to his best and looked very good with chaplow carter looked good when he came on so think we have nothing to worrie about in the midfield area looked good all over to be honest am sure once irvin works more on going forward there wont be a problem top 6 am sure.

choplow was the best player by far, he was the only one looking for a killer pass, every other player passed it across the pitch, and nicholson on the right dosnt go, he looked way out of place.

Fact is that every team these days plays one winger one one flank & a player tucked in on the other flank. No teams play with two wingers these days. Therefore playing Nicholson on the right side makes good sense to me. I think a good understanding with Hart overlapping will develope.. The question is who to play on the left?.. I've championed Lewis Neale to be included in the past but can be too lightweight & needs to find consistency. Whaley? A right footed, but talented enigma who can sometimes look a little lost. Where is his best position?.. In an ideal world Ross Wallace woukld have been filling that berth. What's Eyresy doing these days?!

Firstly didn't go and didn't watch via Everton website and so can't state for sure BUT the majority of things I have read seemed to suggest thatt Chaplow had a poor game - so it just goes to show that some people see the same thing differently.

As for shape - IF we are playing a TUCKED IN wide midfielder there are options as I woulds suggest that both Chaplow & Sedge could also play the position Nicholson played. I would also say that Carter could play the same role on the left if we played an out and out right winger.

However position is one thing, playing 'between the lines' is another and intelligence comes into that. I would also add that in Hart / Jones we have RB's who can bomb on wide and in SSL a CH that can cover them - not sure we have the same on the LH side....

Glad to read Kenna back in form but was he the siting midfielder? We still need one, especially if fullbacks are attacking often.

As for Whaley I think is only REAL position is second striker - probably away from home - off Brown or as a second half sub...

I went last night.

We were OK but then again we were playing a reserve Everton team.

The biggest shock was up front.
Mellor was off the pace and looking FAT....can this guy carry that weight without Irvine having a go at him.

Chaplow looked calm and confident and our back line looked solid and capable.

It's the striker we need now....were going to be in real trouble if we dont put some goals away this season.
I'm 50/50 on Ormerod....he's no way good enough for the league and Mellor....well mellor may just get a nock and we wont see him for 6 weeks.

Little worried unless Alan can pull in some loans ASAP

What the hell is a 'resvers' team?? Unlucky blackpoo, heard your exotic trip to northern Ireland was called off, looks like another pre-season on the promenade for you then.

There are no first teams in pre-season you tool.
