Preston North End featherweight Barry Nicholson has won a pat on the head from Alan Irvine after passing the toughness test in the Championship.
The mini-midfielder has not only survived his first gruelling month in English football, but he has given as good as he has got, according to the Preston manager.

"The one worry you might have with someone of Barry's stature is whether the Championship will blow them away," said Irvine. "But it hasn't blown him away, far from it.

"His intelligence and his understanding of the game mean he can cope with it without any problem."

Nicholson is the smallest member of Irvine's squad at just 5ft 7in tall and tipping the scales at just over nine stone.

Yet despite the physical nature of the Championship, especially amongst the gritty men in the engine room, he has already earned the respect of team-mates and opponents in his first five matches following a summer move from Aberdeen.

"We have been absolutely delighted with Barry and the way he has settled in," Irvine told the Evening Post.

"He has been terrific. He is a really clever player and he is a real goal threat too. In almost every game he has played he has either scored or very nearly scored. I couldn't be more pleased with how he has fitted in since he arrived here."

Apparantly he refused to sign a new contract at Aberdeen and expressed a desire to play for North End.
That was indeed a lucky break. Can you compare anyone with the great Sir Tom but at 5' 7'' and 9 stones he is similar in stature and in fact I think 2 inches smaller. He also seems to have the great master's ability to get amongst the goals.
Was there really a need for the Blackpool game to be switched to a Sunday?

What a steal this lad is! He may be small but that means nothing if you have a footballing brain to go with it.I would say all the Preston fans are very happy with him and will help us up to the premiership, sooner rather that later i hope! Up the whites.

Agree with the above but we mustn't forget the partnership with Jones. The one thing Barry doesn't seem to have is the pace to go outside a fullback and cross. Because he plays in field a bit Billy provides the width and pace and crosses.

The only time Barry has had a poor game is when Billy was occupied with a good winger and couldn't get up to support -Sheff Weds away...In other words this is a TEAM Irvine is building that compliments each other.

I agree Rev.

He has only been disappointing so far at Wednesday away when he could not get in the game at all and was taken off in favour of sedge being utilised out there.

He is a lively midfielder although small in stature although his passing with kenna and chappers they look like they have been together for years.

He also has the Paul Scholes knack of getting in behind the front 2 and getting goals. These goals are very important and what we have been seriously lacking over the years.

The goal threat we now have from midfield is probably the best midfield threat we have had for many a year!!! Chappers, Kenna, Wallave and Nicho all look like notching and that alleviates the pressure from the strikers which was happening last year.

The midfield now embarasses people like Jarrett, Nicholls, Neal et al who never looked like a threat from midfield.

Slightly off topic people but i have just had the pleasure of watching Peterbrough v Bristol Rovers. It has just finished 5-4 to the Posh.

It is quite simply more proof that the Premiership is not the be all and end all in this country.

I would much rather watch something like this with 2 teams going after each other rather than Man United v Chelsea both playing 4-5-1 and it ending up in a boring 0-0 which the games often do as teams are too scared to go after each other.

There is football outside the top division and it is thoroughly entertaining at a vastly reduced price!!! Give me Posh 5 - Rovers 4 ANYDAY over paying £75 a ticket to watch United v Chelsea in a dire 0-0 affair.

good shout Tom, even though Posh scored 5 their defence looked more likely to concede, and I was hoping the Gas (Bristol Rovers) would get at least a draw as I have a soft spot for them as my daughter was the PNE mascot back in April 2000 (promotion year) at The Memorial. Having seen both those defences, makes you feel quite good about how solid the PNE defence is !

NINE stone??? Blimey, I knew he was little, but I don't think I've ever seen a player that light.

Are we sure he wasn't just hiding inside Neil Mellor's shirt when he first arrived at Deepdale?
