Kevin Nicholls has been released by Preston North End only a year after joining the club from Leeds United.
The 29-year-old midfielder has had his contract terminated after talks with boss Alan Irvine.
He arrived at Deepdale in June 2007 in a deal worth £750,000.
Nicholls' first year at Deepdale turned sour for the Londoner after arriving from Elland Road last summer and being handed the captain's armband at the end of August following the sale of Graham Alexander to Burnley.
During a poor run of results - which eventually cost manager Paul Simpson his job - fans turned on the skipper. And Nicholls reacted by asking to be relieved of the captaincy.
Irvine's arrival in November saw the former Luton star relegated to the bench after just two games. And since then he has been amongst the substitutes on only five occasions and has managed a total of just five minutes on the pitch.
