Kevin Nicholls has been released by Preston North End only a year after joining the club from Leeds United.
The 29-year-old midfielder has had his contract terminated after talks with boss Alan Irvine.

He arrived at Deepdale in June 2007 in a deal worth £750,000.

Nicholls' first year at Deepdale turned sour for the Londoner after arriving from Elland Road last summer and being handed the captain's armband at the end of August following the sale of Graham Alexander to Burnley.

During a poor run of results - which eventually cost manager Paul Simpson his job - fans turned on the skipper. And Nicholls reacted by asking to be relieved of the captaincy.

Irvine's arrival in November saw the former Luton star relegated to the bench after just two games. And since then he has been amongst the substitutes on only five occasions and has managed a total of just five minutes on the pitch.

Sorry for the fella but it was 750k wasted, but that said it could have been money well spent if he had pulled his socks up and worked harder on his fitness.

Hmmmm... Good players don't go bad overnight. I don't think he was given a fair crack at forging a career at Preston but Mr Irvine knows what he's doing so good luck to Kev.

Very interesting..... this could mean one of 2 things i suspect!
Freeing up his wages for a 3rd imminent arrival or something has happened internally at the club with him and the boss or unnamed player?
Surely Wallace's arrival means midfield is fully catered for - any more departures?
Bet we get a long term target early next week as a result of KN leaving so hastily.
Centre Forward please Alan!!!

He might do ok for someone in league 2, maybe Luton? Good luck to him.
At least it shows we have a bit more ambition now

According to Sky Sports he has indeed signed for Luton as their transfer embargo was lifted today.

It was difficult for the fella as he joined us at a time of unrelenting pressure on an unpopular gaffer and attempting to replace Alexander as captain meant that he was on a bit of a hiding to nothing with most supporters. Still, not only did he step up to the mark but also knew when to relinquish the armband and, whilst it's £750K wasted, I don't entirely lay responsibility at his door. No doubt he will relish the minus 30 points he finds his side on at Luton!

Like someone else said, I just hope that this means a salary can be paid for another signing as - despite the pre-season - I still believe that we are short in a couple of departments.

In fact, I have just found this on the Luton Town website and here is the cruncher in all his glory:

Right, as I do have a life I'm off out for a beer or three.
