Lonergan: I feel partly to blame for Youl loss

Andrew Lonergan says the serious knee injury suffered by Preston team-mate Youl Mawene is a huge blow.
Mawene is facing several months on the sidelines with a torn medial ligament suffered in Monday night's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at Deepdale.

He collided with goalkeeper Lonergan after getting a shove from Magpies striker Marlon Harewood as they chased a ball in the North End area.

It will be well into the New Year until the Frenchman is fit enough to return, although one comfort Mawene can take is that his cruciate ligament wasn't damaged which would have meant even longer out – that was a real fear until a scan showed otherwise.

Lonergan said: "Youl's injury is a big blow for everyone here.

"It's disappointing news, and myself being involved in the incident doesn't make me feel so great.

"We feared it might be quite serious at the time, it takes a lot for Youl to stay down in the way he did.

"We've had a look at what happened, he got a kick on the heels and a push which forced him into me.

"Youl had played really well in the game, he had a rest for a few games to freshen up and that looked like it had done him the world of good.

"He's a good professional and will come back from this."Mawene's prognosis was delivered after a scan on Wednesday afternoon and a visit to a specialist."

It's the second time in three years he's suffered a serious knee injury, having damaged the cruciate ligament in his other knee in a friendly against Manchester United in July, 2006.

Just make sure you keep coming out like that Andy. Don't let this affect your game.

Exactly Briman.

Lonners should come out more often and flatten the opposition and even his own defenders if need be!

Nash springs to mind against Reading 3 years ago when he pole axed Kitson with a karate kick! Excellent work!!!

It was the shove in the back from Harewood that was also partly to blame!!!

A blow for Youl and North End. I don't think he lost a header in the air on Monday. A model professional with a cool head. Get well soon.

Wishing Youl a speedy recovery. He was having a 10 out of 10 game until the unfortunate injury. No fault of Lonners, and as with the previous comments, take no prisoners.

Big loss for north end, I hope the guy who pushed him is also feeling bad for pushing him in the first place, I hope he has been told of his "sporting" push on Mawene, no fault of Lonergan, it's time to start pushing a few more around yourself Andy........these accidents happen in the game, just a pity also that the ref did not blow up for half time as he should have done on time, and not 20 seconds later.....best wishes to Youl.

Also no mention of Carroll's elbow on Collins to win the flick on which Mawene and Harewood were chasing.

Has anyone seen Nolan play at centre half yet as he might have to step up soon (and Callum will have to start playing 90mins too).

Tangerine:

Unfortunately too many PNE fans genuinely won't travel to sit in that AWFUL 'stand'. We'll know more about support levels next season when we have somewhere half-decent to sit at gloomfield. Any of you lot remember when you couldn't even sell 5,000 HOME tickets for the last time we came to the 'old-style' Bloomfield? You ended up giving us half the ground cos you couldn't fill it! So think on before you start on about support levels!

On a serious note it is bad that we can't sell 1700 tickets but there'll be 1500 of us singing in the rain and being very jealous of you lot sitting under cover!
