Irvine's not getting carried away

Alan Irvine has told his Preston North End players not to get too carried away with their Austrian goal-fest.
The Deepdale manager was satisfied after watching an 11-0 walloping of part-timers FC Erdal Hallein on Saturday.

But with fitness being the only concern so early in the pre-season preparations, it was straight back to hard graft at Springfields on Monday.

Irvine said: "Winning is important once the season is underway – but at the moment it is not the most important thing.

Ruthless North End went goal crazy in Hallein, enjoying themselves against the locals with some slick football after being cooped up all week at their boot camp in Obertraun.

Neil Mellor smashed a hat-trick, Richard Chaplow banged in two and there were others from Brett Ormerod, Karl Hawley, Darren Carter, Youl Mawene, Simon Whaley and a rare strike from Matt Hill.

Irvine split his squad in half to give everyone 45 minutes in the first friendly of the summer.

The manager had planned a full 90-minute run-out for everyone over in Austria.

>> Former Preston star sacked for being overweight

But that idea bit the dust when Friday night's scheduled fixture against Romanian champions CFR Cluj at the club's training base was called off earlier in the week.

The players will get a more intensive work-out tomorrow night when they tackle Bamber Bridge and Chorley in simultaneous matches at Irongate and Victory Park (both 7pm).

But despite Saturday's opposition – a side from the fourth tier of Austrian football – failing to stretch PNE, Irvine was still pleased with the way his squad looked.

totally agree with not getting carried away. However winning is a good habit to get into.

How life at Deepdale has changed since 11 months ago. Last August it was just misery around the place. Now its good feeling in the Air. Roll on the New Season.

I disagree, winning puts a smile on the face, breeds confidence and puts the players in the right frame of mind. Of course fitness is very important and I doubt anyone wouldn't disagree that PNE aren't pushing full fitness and will be ready for the start of the season. Contrast this to last season where we didn't one friendly (did we?), lost all 3 in the US and the players weren't actually fit at all.

Well done Mr.Irvine and all the squad, you're in fine fettle and scoring goals for fun!

Apparently CFR Cluj called the game off against PNE because the manager didn't want his players to be demoralised by Alan Irvine's boys in white.

Now, bring on Blackpool and another 11 - 0 tonking this time against the lowly seasiders ;o)

By the way, I am not getting carried away I trhink that Blackpool will struggle this season. They are on the decline whereas we are on the up. Our worst season in over a decade still saw us finish higher up in the league than they did during their best season for 30 years. Class really does tell in the end ;o)

COME ON WHITES!!!

Just read their comments, and how right they are! Just goes to show that their must be some sane donkey lashers out there. Just goes to show that, even with people coming on here complaining that we are not signing players etc. We are a well run, stable and now envied club. Roll on the PNE bandwagon may it go all the way to the Prem. Fancy chances against anyone at Wembley May 09.

I think we should do well in both cup competitions this season BaldyAl. Last pre-season was a shambles but Al has steadied the ship and we have been in very impressive form since new year. If we get off to a good start we should do well.

It would be great to go into April next year in the playoffs and to beat poor little Blackpool to condemn them back to League One where they belong. As one of their fans has written on the Gazette site "what a shambles" ha ha ha ha!

The future is bright, the future is white! Onwards and upwards :o)
