Irvine spells out North End transfer plans

Preston North End will not bust their wage policy to land new faces by Monday's transfer deadline.
Manager Alan Irvine is chasing at least two players – a goalscorer and a central defender – before the August window slams shut.

But he has revealed the club's limited supply of cash for pay and transfer fees is proving the biggest stumbling block.

He said: "We are obviously having to do it within our means. There are a lot of players that might spring to mind when you are thinking about possible signings.

"But we have our own wage constraints to consider and obviously there are constraints with transfer fees too.

"We can't possibly buy a number of players people are writing in to me about."

Irvine has been frustrated throughout the summer with the lack of progress in the market.

Having captured midfielder Barry Nicholson on a free from Aberdeen – a signing which is already looking a shrewd bit of business – his only other success since last season has been the arrival of winger Ross Wallace on an extended loan.

Irvine needs cover at the heart of his defence with only two of his four recognised centre-halves fit to play.

And the need for more firepower was highlighted in Tuesday's cup defeat by strugglers Derby.

Preston still have Chris Brown and Brett Ormerod in reserve after the first five fixtures of the new season.

Brown could return to the 16 for Saturday, although he is well-short of match fitness after being sidelined since the Everton friendly with ankle and back problems.

Do people actully write to irvine telling them who they should sign?

I find that a tad bit sad.

It was your taxes funding the NHS that paid for the stand. So thanks anyway for your contribution

Mondays not really the deadline, as the "loan with a view to a permanent move" makes a bit of a mockery of the transfer window system

Post #1,there is money ect,but the club is not going to be held to ransom. You know that as both Blackpool and Preston can't go out and spend big due to the income from the running of the club. But we as fans have a great boss and chairman who will do the business, but it will take time. Your club have had to wheel and deal and it shows so far this season, that the players your boss has picked up are below the standard you had last season!I know you guys like coming on hear and sniping but your opinions are child like and mean nothing, so go and pull your shorts up and grow up.

I see one of the donkey lashers is back. hehehe.

PNE's situation is nothing like Blackpool's. Loser Larry is already stating that he wants to finish top of a mini league - the bottom eight ! How ambitous is that ? Loser Larry taking the Lashers down !

If this is a "crisis" at PNE, I will sit their , on Saturday, just looking at what Derek Shaw & Co have achieved.... it is not "pie in the sky" like sewing-bags Owen Oyston recently blurted about! ian_hesford-blah_blah_blah just go and sit on the beach and ponder the thought that if only you'd be born 15 miles east of where you were, then you could enjoy being a real football fan. Instead, you have to wear a tangergreen shirt!

Onwards & upwards with Alan Irvine's Super Whites !

Can just imagine some of the Al'll Fix It letters...

Dear Al,

Please could you fix it for me to see Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard playing for Preston North End.

I am sure they will want to play here as I have them playing for Preston in Championship Manager and they have won the Premiership for me so I am sure they will play here properly.

If you just add another manager and cheat by selling Karl Hawley to Chelsea for 40 million like I did you can break the wage structure.

Congratulations on the hard work so far, but I won the Champions League in my second season so come on Alan!

Baldy...please don't read any more of my letters out, I'll get embarrassed.

Wee Al knows what he's doing, and I reckon he's already close to completing a deal for a striker, he just doesn't want another club nipping in and beating him to it. He knows we're lacking firepower upfront...and he'll get the right player in. Look how we doubted Brown and Nicholson? We'd all love Scrooge, I mean Hemmings, to splash the cash...but it's not going to happen unless we go up. I'd rather see a few shrewd signings on the cheap and keep our heads above water.

I really believe that any player coming to Deepdale and seeing the passion, knowledge and commitment of Alan Irvine will be tempted to take a chance with us, even if we can't pay them a fortune. Genuine footballers with the same passion, I mean...not mercenaries chasing a Bentley. And those are exactly the players we want. Look how Ross Wallace changed his mind when he wasn't offered regular First XI football at Sunderland...the lad just wants to play.

I'm more optimistic than I've ever been about North End's prospects. It might happen this season, or next....but Alan irvine is the man to get us where we deserve to be.

Keep The Faith. Up The Whites.
