Irvine prepares for business as usual

Alan Irvine insists he will treat Sunday's Preston North End dead rubber at Bristol City with the utmost respect.
With Preston safe from relegation and the Robins having already confirmed their play-off place, there's little riding on the Ashton Gate clash.

But with a near capacity crowd expected through the turnstiles, including a sizeable following from Lancashire, it's business as usual for North End boss Irvine.

He wants his players to finish a disappointing season on a high note, the team having fought a relegation battle until a fortnight ago.

Irvine told the Evening Post: "We've got a lot of fans travelling down to Bristol who deserve a good performance from us.

"We are professionals and will approach the game in a professional manner even though there isn't much to play for.

"The preparation will be the same as for any other game – we're flying down tomorrow as we would for any long distance trip.

"It would have been easy to decide to save money and go on the coach, but we're doing it the proper way.

"We're flying in the morning, training when we get there and then we've got the game on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm looking forward to the game, although I must admit I'm looking forward more to July 1, when the players come back for pre-season training.

"That will be the time when I can really start to get my ideas across, work on the things which so far I haven't been able to because of the position we've been in.

"But first we've got Bristol City to look forward to and they've done very well to get into the play-offs in their first season back in this division.

"They've got there on merit and it's just a shame for them that they've fallen away towards the end – they'd had an outstanding season.
"It has become a bit more difficult for them lately. Now they've got to concentrate on making themselves right for what they hope will be three play-off games."

Irvine will add player of the year Sean St Ledger to the squad which drew against Ipswich last week, the centre-back having recovered from a hamstring strain.

on another subject i would like to say that irvine has done a superb job this season. i also hope the board needs to give alan a decent kitty for the new season. however if he doesnt get alot he may have to sell. i feel we should cash in whaley players who under performed. i feel he has scored a couple of important goals and set up some. but i feel he is'nt playing with passion or even good enough.

May appear like nothing to play for but Bristol City know that they need a win to guarantee a home tie in the 2nd round of the play offs semi's. IF they don't win then Watford will go above them after winning at Bloomfield.

What with Sheff U blowing their chances at Southampton; Brian Laws completing the Owls survival; Chris Coleman inspiring his team to a dramatic late win and Leicester repeating at Stoke what they did at West Brom (1 - 4) it will be a VERY NERVOUS AFTERNOON on the Fylde... especially as some of Pool's players know they are leaving after the game anyway !!!!!!!!

I'm also looking forward to the lashers getting relegated on Sunday. Come on Watford, Saints, Coventry, Sheff Weds. Hohoho!

Want to see Blackpool stay up. Great derby and 6 points certain for next year when all their best players leave in the summer!

either way, post #3 and #4 will mean joy for PNE fans ;-)

For those of you on your way to Bristol this Sunday, welcome from the South West, Wales & Cumbrian Fans Association (yes, we're quite well spread out), and the Cumbrian element has boogered off to New Zealand, so we're even more spread out these days.

Let me tell you, living just north of Bristol, we have MASSIVE support from the blue half of the city ;-) for this last match of the season.

Whaley for me has been dissapointing this season and only seems to put in a performance if he gets wind that a premiership scout is present! Sedge might not have any pace but at least he tries to beat his man! Any half decent offer for Whaley and i'd snap their hand off. As for the lashers let them stay up so we can turn them over home and away next season and send them packing into freefall to their rightful home of the Blue Square Premier League!

I for one will be celebrating Sunday afternoon when that dreadful team with only half a stadium take their rightful place back in League One :)
