Alan Irvine has vowed to sharpen up Preston North End's blunt attack after their winning run in pre-season was ended by Everton.
The boss saw his side have the majority of possession in the Deepdale clash but they couldn't convert pressure into goals as the Toffees won 1-0 in front of a healthy 10,322 crowd.

Irvine used all four of his strikers at various stages last night, starting with Chris Brown and Brett Ormerod, before switching to a Neil Mellor/Karl Hawley partnership.

Brown's substitution just before half-time was an enforced one – the ex-Norwich player hobbled off after going over on his ankle.

But the injury is thankfully not thought to be a serious one – Irvine just did not want to take any chances with the fitness of his players with the new season a little over a fortnight away.

Reflecting on the defeat to Everton, where he was assistant to David Moyes for five years, Irvine said: "I got a lot of what I wanted out of the game.

"I thought we passed the ball really well, we were very much in control as far as possession was concerned – we actually got 27 crosses in which was pleasing.

"But we did not look like we were going to score a lot of goals – we lacked that cutting edge up front.

"I was delighted with everything up until the final third, but we'll have to do better in that department. We've not done an awful lot of work in that area yet, although we will turn our attention to that soon.

"There is no doubt we need to score more goals. We played some controlled football. I was really pleased with how we built from the back and played through the middle.

"The hardest bit is in the final third. That is where we need to have something a bit more special to open the door.

"You need some guile to open up defences, especially one like Everton who had two internationals playing at centre-back."

It is with a heavy heart Tom, that I have to agree with you... We need 3 players in before the season kicks off. A centre back, a creative left midfielder & a pacey striker.. We need to get certain players who cant take us to the next level shipped or loaned out

i think lewis neal is good enough but we can get better try ross wallace again because if sunderland sign malbranqe then wallace will be pushed further down the pecking order. As for strikers what about Adeybayor!!! LOL

Buckshaw.....

I am not trying to personally attack Brett, Lewis or Karl but the simple fact of the matter is they are not up to it.

There is no room for sentiment in this game. We did it in 2001/2002 after we had won promotion to this division. We cleared ou the lads who had won us promotion from Division 2 and replaced them with players capable fo taking us to the next level.

We had them players but then sold them all on. However they were never replaced and we have acquired lots of very AVERAGE and poor players since.

Once again we must see that we are carrying players fit for League 1 and let them go so that we can build a squad that will compete and are ood enough to play at this level.

PNEforever,

Misfud to sign for PNE in the next couple of days 23/07/2008 10:16:25
Derek was trying to keep this one quiet but sources in the midlands are reporting that Misfud has been told he can leave Coventry as he will not be first choice after they signed eastwood and are on the verge of signing Clinton Morrison. He would be a good signing, pace, and could play off Brown. Hawley is also on his way to Stockport after the clubs agreed a one year loan deal arrangement.

Pne forever not sure i believe you fella........

Mifsud is going to go to Man Citeh.

Mark Hughes liked him and with the impending striker crisis at Citeh he will go there and provide good support for Jo and Benjani.

Quite possibly, Tom, some fans are as much to blame as anyone for that. I remember last season, many fans were in such a panick to sign a striker and they were demanding the club to 'act fast' and what did we end up with - Hawley!

The worrying thing is that the same thing is happening again and some are questioning the club for not signing more players (it makes me wonder what some people think Derek Shaw and Alan Irvine do? Maybe Sat at home playing on their playstations, sipping coke and eating doughnuts, instead of actively looking to sign players?) give me strength!

The club want quality players and players not just to make up the numbers and if Alan Irvine can't get the right ones, what is the point in him signing average additions just to appease some supporters, who can't show a simple level of patience?

Overseeing eye i accept what you have to say and it is a sensible one.

However, i can;t helkp thik we have not been proactive enough in pursuing targets? I don;t know for sure as nothing ever comes out and so it shouldn;t until a deal is done. But all the best players appear to have made their moves and we are now stuck with trawling for a player who we need but from players who aren;t as good as ones that have already moved.

Lisbie, Paterson or Morrison would have been an excellent signing for us.

Kevin Lisbie - moved to Ipswich, Ipswich receive at least double our income in gate receipts and thus can pay a far higher premium in wages. Ipswich Town just finished outside the play-offs and we just staved off relegation. Ipswich is 17.5 miles from Colchester whereas Preston is 270 miles.

Clinton Morrison - He is looking to tie up a deal in London and turned Coventry City down for that reason and I am sure Coventry city pay higher wages that ourselves and even they couldn't tempt him.

Paterson - Would have been an excellent signing and joined a club that is similar in stature to ourselves and normally it is Burnley that lose out to us in terms of signing players of this nature. They look to be going for it and have spent considerably to do so - do we have that finance to seal deals?

Bristol City have had an offer accepted for Mifsud. This is a player we should be going in for. Hes quick and a great finisher. Price should never come into it, after all how much have we spent this summer???
