Angry manager Alan Irvine has revealed he demanded a touchline apology from referee Jon Moss during Preston North End's Carling Cup defeat by Derby County.
The Preston boss was furious the West Yorkshire official wrongly accused him of giving abuse to the fourth official following the Rams' winning goal.
"One of the things I pride myself in is honesty," Irvine told the Evening Post.
"And I don't take kindly to being accused of something I didn't do."
The incident came shortly after Paul Green's header had broken the deadlock at Deepdale.
Moss went over to the dug-outs and was seen to remonstrate with Irvine.
But the manager pleaded his innocence, saying: "I didn't do what I was being accused of.
"There had been a push in the build-up to the goal but I wasn't disputing that. That wasn't what the incident was all about.
"The reason was because the referee decided at that point to stop the multi-ball and then came over and accused me of abusing the fourth official.
"Fortunately the fourth official said immediately to the referee I hadn't, and so I demanded an apology from the referee.
"He did apologise – after a fashion."
Irvine added: "I am extremely disappointed to be out. Someone asked me afterwards if I was happy to be able to turn our attention to the league now, but I'm not happy about that at all. It is no consolation.
"We would have turned our attention to the league anyway to concentrate on Saturday's visit of Charlton.
"But it would have been lovely to concentrate on the next round of the cup as well."
