Preston North End boss Alan Irvine said thanks to the Deepdale fans after the final home game of the season but was denied a winning send-off.
A late Jonathan Walters goal secured a 2-2 draw for Ipswich after North End had come from behind to lead.

Irvine was hoping for a 12th home win of the season to finish Preston's home campaign in style and seal a fitting end to his first season in charge in front of the North End fans.

He said: "I'm disappointed we didn't see the game off.

"I'd absolutely love to be in a position like Ipswich.

"It would be fantastic to think we still had a chance of the play-offs - obviously it isn't something I even considered at any time, we had another job to do.

"Today there was that little edge that wasn't quite there at the start of the game. The goal probably jolted us into a bit of action, at least there was a reaction to the goal."

Ipswich manager Jim Magilton said: "I think we started really brightly, but we started to take our foot off the gas.

"It's probably been a bit like us all season - when we have had teams on the ropes we have not really managed to kill them off, so credit to Preston who got back in the game.

"I would have been very upset if we had not got something from the game. I knew it would come down to the last game."

Lets hope Paul McKenna now goes home, has a good rest, gets himself fit for the new season, and he also discovers his ability to pass!!!

His passing was awful at times Collydog. Chaplow was equally guilty too, I lost count of the number of times we gave the ball away in decent attacking positions.

Mellor looked a real threat especially in the second half. Mellor and Brown together look to be a great combination. Mellor has bagged ten goals now this season which is not bad considering how many games he missed! If he can stay fit all next season I think we have found our 20+ goals a season striker.

Thought Trotters and Hart played really well. Trotters looked a little shaky with his first few touches but that's to be expected. He soon bedded in and looked a great prospect after that, made some fantastic tackles and shielded the ball very well. Hart looks a better defender than Jones and seems very composed too.

Have a good clearout in the summer and get a few players in and we're laughing. Brown and Mellor can fire us up next time.

On the subject of McKenna, I'll probably now make myself very unpopular and question whther he has a long-term future in this team if we are seriously going for the premiership. Same goes for Mawene. It really pains me to write this, cos they are two of my favourite players at Deepdale over the last few years, but based on their performances this season I honestly don't think either deserve a regular start. How many penalties has Youl given away, how many times has he been turned? Has McKenna really inspired the team since being made captain? How many goals has he scored? And his passing.... I so hope I'm wrong, but everyone has a sell-by date. It'll be a tricky one for Alan Irvine to manage, especially McKenna, but I bet he does, one way or another.

Good game overall to end the home leg of the season. Pity we couldn't nick the three points, but lots of positives, especially young Mr. Trottman who just got better and better as the game went on, and Mr. Hart who applied himself admirably. McKenna just needs a rest I'm sure.He played some good balls and got stuck in a few times to win tackles. We shouldn't be looking at negatives now, should we?? Chaplow seems to be still finding his real role but I'm sure that will come with time. After next week Alan will have the time to assess what is needed, who stays, who goes, who comes in and will receive the necessary backing from the Board to enable him to continue his rejuvination of the team. It would be nice to see those 'extras'in the crowd from Saturday turning up more frequently next season, even perhaps buying a season ticket?? Who knows. Thank you Alan Irvine because now the future really is bright, the future is White. Onwards and upwards with the superwhites!!
