Alan Irvine declared himself happy with his Preston squad as English football entered a five-week freeze on player movement last night.
The Deepdale boss allowed the deadline for emergency loans to pass without doing any business in or out.

And even though North End's resources in the centre of defence could be described as temporarily stretched following the exit of Wayne Brown on Tuesday, Irvine is content to stick with what he has got until the transfer window proper reopens on January 1.

"Had we been in the situation we were in a couple of months ago I may have done something," he said as the market shut down at 5pm.

"But we are getting our players back, the majority are fit now, we have competition for places again and we are playing well.

"There isn't an emergency situation, so I don't think it is necessary to bring anyone else in.

"We are still a bit vulnerable at the back if we suddenly pick up a couple of injuries. But we can get through – at least I hope we can.

"I didn't think it would be right to go asking the chairman for more money at this stage.

"But who knows? I might need to do that in the future.

"This club has to be run in a very careful and prudent manner. It has been for years and it needs to continue in that manner.

"We have all seen the trouble many other clubs have got into and that can't happen at Preston.

"The chairman and the board were brilliant in supporting me when we brought in Wayne Brown on wages which weren't budgeted for. But we don't have to do that again at the moment.

"I don't want to just bring someone in for the sake of it."

In Irvine we trust. Interesting that line "We have all seen the trouble many other clubs have got into and that can't happen at Preston. Well i think it could happen unless we start getting 16-17,000 through the turnstiles.

The question is ..how do we get those 16 - 17k through the turnstiles at Deepdale?...Reduce prices a bit?..Market the club a bit better?... Hopefully the Plastics will be relegated from the Premier League this season & that may bring some fans back. But the 5-6k shortfall?... How can PNE attract the peole that wander around the Preston dictrict with their Manu, Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea shirts on but never watch a live game, through the Deepdale turnstiles... It's a tough one!

Lets get 1 thing straight. The fans expect loyalty from the players, but where is the loyalty from the fans??? Where are those missing 12,000 that went down to Cardiff to see the play off finals against Bolton & West Ham? All we need is half of these glory seekers to get down to the ground and start spending a little bit and then they can become real fans of a Premiership club.

Derek, I think, is doing an excellent job in keeping us afloat, but I would also like to question the loyalties of the "Friends" of PNE. 8% interest on a £7million pound loan. Now the government are talking of taking banks to court to force them to pass on interest rate cuts to the customers - and this is on interest rates of around 4% (please correct me if I am wrong). How can these Friends justify what they are charging North End?

If PNE, Burnley and Blackpool are all in the Championship next season and we are joined by Bolton, Blackburn, Wigan and Leeds then that would generate a lot of interest and money for all concerned (with the exception of ones coming down from the prem)and could lead to fans coming more regularly than 5-6 times a season!

I'm not sure what North End do these days in terms of soccer schools - but this was one of the main reasons that I became a supporter of PNE.

I think marketing the club to kids is the way forward - Kds come free with adult season ticket holders, Free tickets to local schools, Outreach programmes with local schools, Summer soccer schools (where PNE coaches/reserve players make a visit) etc etc.

For the adults it should be a case of 'etting in their faces' with a bit of advertising, offering a good deal. £22-£23 a tickets is quite prohibitive to most, especially to the occasional supporter or 'follower'. Why not try an experiment for one saturday afternoon league match - £10 adult tickets, kids come free. Get the offer advertised in the LEP and Rock FM and see how many turn up. At the very worst all the regulars will turn up and the club will lose half the revenue of one home game. Worth a punt I reckon - just to see exactly how many 'floating' supporters that city has. 33,500 at Cardiff suggests that PNE has enough!

Mark (post #5) the problem with a £10 adult ticket for games is that it is wholly unfair on season ticket holders (I'm not one, as I live in the south). However, giving free kids tickets is widely accepted as the future, and I'm sure everyone would support that. As for 33500 turning up at Cardiff. Of course, that's the maximum pull - we've never done that since my Dad was a lad.

Re post 6, Im a season ticket holder on BSK and it wouldnt bother me if we had £10 games once or twice a season. Plenty of potential fans out there to catch the imagination of.

Also when we have a Saturday/Tuesday run of home games, like in a few weeks against Donny and Brum, buy one at full price and get seat in the same stand for next game for £15 say?
