Deepdale boss Alan Irvine admits it is going to be difficult for Preston North End to equal last season's play-off charge.
With little money in the coffers, Irvine could be forced to cut his cloth further in the coming weeks as he bids to strengthen his squad for a Championship challenge he expects to be even harder in 2009-10.

Irvine told the Evening Post: "It is going to be an extremely difficult task to repeat what Preston did last season.

"It is going to be hard to improve on that.

"We have to appreciate where we are I think.

"This season, the competition could be even fiercer.

"And with Newcastle and Middlesbrough, two giants clubs in there, it is going to be massively difficult to compete against clubs of those resources.

"There are others in the division who have a lot more money than they did last year because they've had fresh investment.

"That almost certainly means that there will be more teams competing for the top six this year.

"There's no doubt in my mind that we've made significant progress in the last 18 months, though, and I hope we will continue to make
progress.

"There is good potential here and that was definitely a big factor in my decision to remain, but it is going to get harder."

While chairman Derek Shaw has pledged to do everything in his power to help Irvine play the transfer market, the PNE boss accepts he might not be able to strengthen his squad significantly.

If you beleive rumors which I don't, according to the Daily Tart, Mckenna's going to Forest over the weekend. I wouldn't get to wound up about it as I don't believe anything newspapaers write any more. Even the LEP.

We just need to improve on our away performances to better last season. I for one am hoping AI has learnt soemthing from last season poor away form and maybe considers a change of formation on our travels to combat this.

It is likely that McKenna will go... Why not? New challenge.. better wages..bigger club...He has had his testamonial...

Why get down about it? We have Hart, Trottman and Chilvers and Chaplow (if fully fit) back for the start of the season. Eddie Nolan has come on leaps and bounds and I still believe Davidson (when fit) can do a midfield role.

For me a quick striker (a young kid on loan?) and a quicker than Sedgewick, right winger will make us a stronger team. I know the young kid Mayor has been touted HOWEVER asking a kid to play 40+ games in a season against seasoned pro's will probably result in more bad games than good ones. For me coming off the bench as an impact player is more likely.

HAVING SAID ALL THIS LETS BE REALISTIC AND LOOK AT THE TEAMS IN THE DIVISION THIS YEAR...WE NEED TO STAY RELATIVELY INJURY FREE AND HAVE SOME BIG SLICES OF LUCK..

I think all us fans can make a difference and its time the club filled the seats even if it meant £2 a seat. I as a season ticket holder have no problem with filling the stadium if it means extra money for the club BUT more importantly a better atmosphere. More free coaches to away games within 100 mile radius would help our away performances..... The support was magnificant at certain games last year.

Players and managers come and go but the majority of us are here for life.........

Callum's a quality player and wouldn't look out of place in any midfield. He can put the ball on a sixpence, so if we can keep him fit he'd do a job there no worries!! I'd even make him captain if kenna goes.
