Preston North End old boy Michael Keane is out of work after being sacked by Irish club St Patrick's Athletic...for being overweight!
The 25-year-old has been shown the door by the Eircom League side after failing to slim down.

Keane, who was tipped for big things as a teenager at Deepdale under David Moyes, is challenging the decision to tear up his contract.

St Patrick's say the Dublin-born player was given an ultimatum to lose weight earlier this year. But the club say he has failed to reach his target.

Keane is threatening to take legal proceedings to recover a 200,000 euro pay-out for the outstanding 18 months of his contract.

The midfielder came through the youth scheme at Preston and made 65 appearances for the first team before moving on to play for Grimsby, Hull and Rotherham.

He has been out of favour at the Dublin club this season and has made only two substitute appearances.

A sad end to what might have been a decent career. If professional footballers don't take care of themselves this is what happens. Sorry Michael, you had your chances and you blew it!

It just goes to show that if you are lucky enough to get a bit of hype you need to live up to it and unfortunately for Keano he didn't. He'll be in Mc'ds soon I expect saying he could've made it!
