Fans have rushed to send their best wishes to Preston North End legend Alan Kelly.
The former goalkeeper, who made a record 513 appearances for the club and has a stand at Deepdale named after him, is recovering in the USA after life-saving colon cancer surgery.

Our fans' panellist John Roper said: "The word legend is sometime used out of context, but not when describing the greatest keeper this famous club has ever had.

"Get well soon, Kel, and come back to see us at Deepdale – our thoughts are with you."

Alansh66, from Whittle, said: "I'm gutted for the guy – hope he pulls through. He was in goal when I first started watching North End so I have fond memories of him. Get well soon Alan."

And Roy David, a North End supporter in Kent, was there for Kelly's final game in a North End shirt.

>> Kelly: 'There's life in the old dog yet'

"I saw Alan play many times and was at Deepdale the day he hurt his shoulder which ended his career," said Roy.

"He was a top-notch keeper and all best wishes to him for a speedy recovery."

Keith, from Bristol, tells a great tale of when Kelly starred on the wing for North End, he said: "I remember Alan when I started
watching just after the World Cup in 1966.

"I remember him going up for the ball and being clipped from the side, he then spun upside down and came down vertically, on to his shoulder.
"It was at the right-hand post as the keeper looks towards the Town End.

"It was an age before he was taken off the pitch, and as we'd played our one and only substitute, he came back out on the wing, in that sling! Amazing."

Here are a selection of other messages:

- "Mr Kelly, thoughts are with you, hope you pull through and beat this awful illness," Jatty.

- "All the best to a great man and thanks for the wonderful memories," Graham Nelson.

- "Good luck and get well. I know his grandson and play cricket with him," Sam-pne.

- "I remember him playing on the wing with his shoulder in a sling.

Best wishes to a great servant to the club," Diggerbarnes, Fulwood.

- "I remember we sang from the Kop, 'Alan Kelly, Alan Kelly Alan Kelly on the wing'.

Send your best wishes to william.watt@lep.co.uk or leave a comment below. A selection of which will feature in Friday's Lancashire Evening Post.

Alan was the best Keeper we had at Deepdale in the 49 years I've watched them. Get well soon Alan and best wishes to his family. I also agree with North End Through and Through about A.K. jnr.

Everyone at the NWCPNE would like to wish Alan Kelly well. Get well soon Alan, a big thanks the many years service to the club. Most clubs are only blessed with 1 legend, PNE have been blessed with 5 or 6 and Alan Kelly snr is one of then.

As a lad stood on the old Kop, I remember watching Alan Kelly going off injured in one game (I think with a fractured arm or shoulder). This was in the days of one substitute which PNE has already used. From memory, the injury happened midway through the second half. Alan Kelly then came back on to the pitch for the last 15 mins or so with his arm in a sling and played down the right wing so that PNE weren't a man down. His actions that day showed the sacrifice and willingness to go that bit further for the club that, for me, put Alan Kelly in the same bracket as Sir Tom Finney. That day is one I will never forget in all my days as a PNE fan. Get well soon Alan.

As a youngster supporting North End, Fred Else was our no.1 keeper and when he left I thought he had left an unfillable gap. How wrong I was. Alan was a superb goalkeeper and his record speaks for itself. I salute you Alan and send my best wishes for a speedy recovery. You and your family are in all North Ender's thoughts.

My thoughts and best wishes to Alan and all the family. I played with Dave Kelly at Fulwood Amateurs and I know how close they all are ( the GK fraternity I mean!) Ryan Chrysler

First heard of P N E in 1964 when as a lad I watched my first match on T V it being the cup final. Supported North End that day, why, because the keeper was Irish. 44 years on and still an avid fan. My very best wishes to Alan and hope he returns to visit Deepdale when well again. Good old `Drums` !!
