Fan banned from Deepdale over race abuse

A Preston North End fan who shouted racist abuse at a match has been banned from Deepdale for 12 months.
Stephen Kitchen, 24, of Silverdale Drive in Brookfield, Preston, will have to surrender his season ticket.

He was fined £150 in court last week after he admitted shouting racial insults during an away match against Norwich City last month.

A district judge decided not to impose a banning order which would have prevented him from attending football matches for three years.

Following his appearance at Norwich Magistrates Court, Kitchen said he was "ashamed" of his behaviour.

Now, Deepdale bosses have banned him from home games for the rest of this season and part of next.

When the Evening Post contacted Kitchen on Monday, he said he was unaware of the ban and did not want to comment until he had received a letter from the club.

David Shepherd, ground safety officer at PNE, said: "We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any racist or homophobic activity."

Its a bit late to be ashamed of his behaviour. Lets hope this sends a message to any fans who decide to shout vile abuse, that it will not be overlooked and the offender/s will be punished by the courts and the club.

The fact he bothed to go to Norwich in the first place speaks volumes. So why ban him for a spare of the moment thing?

Have you never done something you regretted?!

I have - choosing PNE - that was 22 years ago, and I'm still paying for it.

Sorry I digress, but seriously, it's the people who don't show remorse in court that are the problem, surely...

Two very different posts there, both with merits in their argument...personally I'm glad the safety officer mentioned other forms of abuse because they should all be treated equally, abuse is abuse and racial abuse should not be prioritised at the detriment of others.

Tend to agree with post 2 sentiments that it does appear that a sledgehammer is being used to crack a nut. What next? The stocks?? Sackcloth and ashes?? That'll be 9,999 on the next game now...oh forgot it'll be nearer 18,000 as people try to get L'pool tickets!!

i saw this young lad being removed at norwich. he has been punished but how many blackpool fans got away with it last march at gloomfield rd. hundreds if not thousands.

shamefull behavior indeed, however, pne do seem to be alienating an increasing number of fans these days. I dont suppose they are that bothered thoough as he will have allready paid for his season ticket and I doubt he will get a refund

Good points #2 and 3,but it has cost him his season ticket,and yes we have all done stupid things, mine was being arrested at deepdale in 1980 against west ham for a gesture to their fans, when the poop hit the fan.But what a silly lad i was that day,never to do nothing silly again at a football match! That day my feet didn't touch the ground and sent home feeling a right looser!

Absolutely post 3 and 5. This is easy crime and punishment for the authorities and ticks all the PC boxes. No-one is condoning it, but it COULD be argued that court was OTT without PNE sticking the boot in too...the pressures of being seen to do the "right" thing lead to a complete loss of perspective. I think 2,000 Blackpool fans should be banned, so their attendances will be even more of a joke than they are now!

Some truth in every comment on this story. If you show remorse you are told its to late; if you don't you are told you are arrogant. Banning might be over the top for a first offence.

Only ever been to one football match - Manchester United V. Southampton in 1985. Has to stand (it was standing then) behind a man United fan who hurled obnoxious and unpleasant racist remarks at a Southampton player for the whole of the match. He also urinated in his fiends pocket.

I believe things have improved now, but after that experience, I will never go to another football match.
