This was a massive team performance against a side who I think will be in the shake up come next May but at times we had them chasing shadows.

Right from the off both sides showed a desire to get the ball down and play
football but with only 17 minutes gone Youl Mawene gave away a needless penalty which Andy Gray tucked neatly away.

It was a poor mistake from an experienced defender in my opinion and I don't think he will be looking forward to the video replay at training on Monday.

It took a while for North End to recover but they eventually got back on an even keel with Parkin twice putting Mellor through one-on-one with the keeper.

The home fans applauded their team off at the break even though they were down.

After the break North End burst out of the traps playing slick fast football and it only seemed a matter of time before we were level.

Sure enough just before the hour Mellor made it 1-1 and 10 minutes later,
Nicholson stabbed home to put a rampant North End in front for the first time.

We continued to dictate and although there were a couple of scares late on, the points stayed at home and we had completed a memorable victory.

I thought that collectively the midfield was outstanding and that Hart and particularly Parkin were different class for North End.

'The Beast' hustled and harried the Charlton defence and for a big guy, he has two very good feet. On the evidence of this display it looks like another shrewed addition to Alan Irvine's squad.

Ten points from four games represents an outstanding start for Alan Irvine's team and it was just a shame that a meagre 12,089 turned up to see it. The
absent fans missed a treat. This was Championship football at its best.

Another impressive performance by North End and another positive result that ensures our unbeaten league record stays intact.

Despite going a goal down after some extremely clumsy defending by Youl Mawene, we managed to turn the tables and, especially in the second half, turn on the style.

In midfield we were excellent, Chaplow and McKenna, flanked by the fantastic Chris Sedgwick and Barry Nicholson, are proving to be real handfuls for opposing teams to cope with, as our neat passing, one and two-touch football seems to tear teams apart. Debutant Jon Parkin defied some of the negative North End critics by proving he isn't just a big man upfront intended to hold the ball up.

He slotted into the Preston side as if he was an ever-present, as he proved to be a crucial link with midfield, won his fair share of headers, held the ball up well and assisted his team-mates on numerous occasions.

Both goals were well engineered and both very similar in he way they came about. Mellor is going to be the focal point for our goals this season but it looks as though Nicholson and the rest of midfield will be chipping in.

Defensively we seemed solid, although I feel Lonergan should do better coming for crosses to relieve his back four of unnecessary pressure.

Michael Hart seemed to cope well at left-back as it looks as though Matt Hill is bound for Wolves, while Billy Jones and Sean St Ledger also put in solid performances to ensure the victory.
