Stephen Elliott became the sixth member of Preston North End's strikeforce when he finally signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers late last night.
Defender Matt Hill went the opposite way to Wolves, his move also pushing the transfer deadline to the limit because of lengthy medical checks.

But, after burning the midnight oil on other deals, Alan Irvine was left frustrated in his attempt to add up to two more players to his squad as the transfer window closed.

The North End boss will now have to wait a week for the emergency loan market to open up if he wants to continue the search for back-up at the heart of his defence and in goal.

Elliott's capture came on the same day Jon Parkin completed the formalities on his move from Stoke City.

Having signed on loan on Saturday to be able to play against Charlton, the 6ft 4in frontman made the deal permanent by signing a three-year contract.

Apart from Hill there were no other outgoings, leaving Irvine with a squad of 26 senior professionals.

With half-a-dozen of those being strikers Irvine will now hope he has the goals on tap to keep PNE in the promotion frame after a superb opening to the new season.

The deals for Elliott and Hill were both held up until late into the night by medical staff. Hill was the first to pass a thorough programme of health checks in the Midlands at around 9.30pm.

But Elliott was kept waiting even longer because of an appointment with a top back specialist.

"It wouldn't be North End if it didn't go right to the wire," said chairman Derek Shaw after the deals eventually went through.

"There wasn't a snag with Stephen, it was just that the back specialist we use had been extremely busy all day and we had to wait our turn.

"But we got it done, Stephen passed without a problem and he is now our player.

"We are sorry to see Matty Hill leave because he has been a model professional and he is a great lad to have around the club."

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy added: "Stephen is a player that I have the utmost respect for. It didn't happen for him here for one reason or another, but I hope he does really well at Preston."

Maybe we should try Dominic Collins? He's impressed in the youth team and looked pretty comfortable in pre-season (albeit at Brig!). Some experience at left half alongside Hart/Callum would do wondesr for him and the strength of the squad.

Oh aye - SimonPNE - apols for the rant on friday nite! Few too many pints of 'wife-beater'!

Looks like a nice piece of business so congratulations all round and wish Matty Hill the best of luck - sometimes players need a fresh challenge to spark up their game so hope the same applies to Elliott who, of course, is an Irish international. I'm not as sure as some that we need more centre backs - Chilvers making good progress and Neil Trotman not that far behind. Would like to hear more about the progress of the 'forgotten man' Wayne Henderson who was the Republic of Ireland's No 1 keeper until his unfortunate injury. Cheers, all.

Thanks for the memories Matt. A player who looked great under BD who wanted his defenders to defend - Hill just didn't look comfortable with the new passing style. He has been a great pro for PNE and guys like that deserve success - best of luck Matt (unless it's between us and Wolves for a promotion spot!)

Nice to see we are signing "internationals" again. Good shout Birky, we look to have a very potent strikeforce now. Cant see us being the "powder-puff" outfit we had last season at the same time. Once everyone is back from injury, and a few additions through the loan market, we should be a recogniseable force this season. Playing the best football I have seen them play in years, good cover in most positions (loans = defence!!!) fantastic stadium, this has to be our year. Watch out all who doubt PNE, we will conquer this season!

Still no comments from BIGTREV. Has he gone into hiding? Great signings for North End. Nice to see board backing AI. Agree would like to see cover for Lonners. Just one thing - why are there so many tuesday evening games? Is it cos we unbeaten for so long?

So the Twellman deal is dead and buried forever. Can't help thinking that if it had come off we would have had a top class strikeforce but then again we have got 2 decent strikers in AL's view so just need to complete the jigsaw at the back

Collydog, there is more Tuesday night games to annoy me lol. or might be because of to many international games. As for the signings, Great signings, be interesting to see how they fit in. Ormerod may be sent on loan. Goodluck Matty.
