Stephen Elliott became the sixth member of Preston North End's strikeforce when he finally signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers late last night.
Defender Matt Hill went the opposite way to Wolves, his move also pushing the transfer deadline to the limit because of lengthy medical checks.
But, after burning the midnight oil on other deals, Alan Irvine was left frustrated in his attempt to add up to two more players to his squad as the transfer window closed.
The North End boss will now have to wait a week for the emergency loan market to open up if he wants to continue the search for back-up at the heart of his defence and in goal.
Elliott's capture came on the same day Jon Parkin completed the formalities on his move from Stoke City.
Having signed on loan on Saturday to be able to play against Charlton, the 6ft 4in frontman made the deal permanent by signing a three-year contract.
Apart from Hill there were no other outgoings, leaving Irvine with a squad of 26 senior professionals.
With half-a-dozen of those being strikers Irvine will now hope he has the goals on tap to keep PNE in the promotion frame after a superb opening to the new season.
The deals for Elliott and Hill were both held up until late into the night by medical staff. Hill was the first to pass a thorough programme of health checks in the Midlands at around 9.30pm.
But Elliott was kept waiting even longer because of an appointment with a top back specialist.
"It wouldn't be North End if it didn't go right to the wire," said chairman Derek Shaw after the deals eventually went through.
"There wasn't a snag with Stephen, it was just that the back specialist we use had been extremely busy all day and we had to wait our turn.
"But we got it done, Stephen passed without a problem and he is now our player.
"We are sorry to see Matty Hill leave because he has been a model professional and he is a great lad to have around the club."
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy added: "Stephen is a player that I have the utmost respect for. It didn't happen for him here for one reason or another, but I hope he does really well at Preston."
