Preston North End central defender Liam Chilvers emerged unscathed from his first 45 minutes of football for six months last night.
But his return was overshadowed by Preston Reserves' 7-1 demolition of arch-rivals Blackpool at Bamber Bridge.

Chilvers, who stunned medics by making such a speedy recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon, was given half a game in thePontins League derby.

But by the time he departed after a steady 45-minutes, a young North End side were already 3-1 up and on course for victory.

The game was a personal triumph for winger Joe Anyinsah who grabbed a hat-trick to give manager Alan Irvine a nudge for the first team.

Rob Turner scored twice and the other goals came from Dominic Collins and Adam Barton.

Blackpool, who fielded six senior professionals in their side including ex-North End defender Marlon Broomes, opened the scoring in only the second minute from a Stuart Green free-kick.

But once North End had levelled through Turner – who struck a hard and low drive inside near post after Nathan Fairhurst's swiftly threaded pass after 23 minutes – they took control.

Six minutes later Anyinsah struck his first, a sweetly-timed shot from 25 yards.

Collins poked home from a goalmouth melee after a corner.

Then, once Green had a goal ruled out for the Tangerines just after the restart, Preston went on the rampage.

Four goals in a 14-minute spell in the second half sent the Seasiders home in humiliation.

Turner tucked home a rebound from another Anyinsah blockbuster, then that man Joe was put through by Adam Barton and a classy side-step allowed him to fire home a fifth after 58 minutes.

Two minutes later, his hat-trick was completed as he struck a drive from the edge of the area past the bewildered Gilks.

With 25 minutes to go, Barton was almost on his own in the Blackpool half and slotted past Gilks. The two sides meet again on the Fylde coast next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Deepdale now has its giant screen after workmen completed the installation yesterday.

Good news all round.

Chilvers on course for a miracle recovery, the score suggesting we have strength in depth, the young players stepping up to the mark and a good workout to look forward to next week after the Blackpool fans make their feelings known.

My goodness 7-1! Any win against those lashers is worth jumping up and down and shouting yes,yes,yes!6 first team players in their side, and one ex north ender i bet he had a good game NOT! Good to see Liam come through ok but still a way to go before he gets back into the first team.

Agree with all the above and I also agree that the 'development' squad is a good idea if it means youth team / 1st year pro's are developed better and gives MORE chance of some of them actually becoming first teamers.

HOWEVER I am concerned about what happens to rhe Senior Pro's now they are NO LONGER SELECTED for the Reserves.

It will now be over a month since the likes of Brett; Lewis Neal; Chris Neal; started or played in ANY game so they cannot possibly be ready should we need them...the same thing is likely to apply to Trotts; Carter; Hawley; Whaley or whoever 'drops out of the first choice 16'.

I know SOME of these will hopefully leave on loan but the rest need somehow to be kept match fit and though Joe & Jason played last night its their first game of the season too...

If any team in any league in any country gets beat 7-1 then something is badly wrong. Any team in any league in any country who wins 7-1 is riding the crest of a wave, and this is just our reserve outfit. Playing for places in the first team is obviously working, and Joe's hat-trick proves how commited he is to proving his worth at Deepdale. He'll be knocking on the door soon. Yesterday the first post on here was from a Tangerine, can't here them now????

being down in the West Country (ooarr)it's difficult enought to get to see PNE at the best of times. However, the Bristol City fans I know are always asking about Joe Anyinsah - they remember him well from his City days and know he is good, now I have good news to report back. Surely, he should be warming the bench more, certainly for that game at Gloomfield in 2 months time ?!?! Well Done Joe on last night's performance !
