Preston North End defender Liam Chilvers reckons Alan Irvine can plot a promotion course this term.
Preston are 40-1 title outsiders, but the Deepdale centre-half is convinced his North End team-mates will emerge as a surprise package.

"This is the fittest I've seen the players since I signed for Preston
two years ago – the lads are flying," said Chilvers.

"Apparently we were 8-1 last season, but we are far better prepared this year.

"There is no reason why we can't make a strong challenge and there's a fantastic vibe at the training ground.

"The level of fitness is superb and that is going to stand them in good stead in the coming months.

"The lads have worked their socks off since they've come back and I can see us doing well this season.

"Even the goalkeepers have had to do the same running as the outfield boys and I'm really impressed with what I've seen.

"All the indications are that the manager will make a few signings before the start of the campaign and that will help give us another edge. We've gone very close to winning promotion in recent years, but I think Stoke and Hull have given us an extra incentive to what can be achieved.

"The infrastructure is right, we've got a fine manager and with the stadium finished, everything seems in place now.

"Remember, we finished last season with a lot of momentum and if we can take that into the first couple of months of the campaign, then we've a great chance of making an impression."

Birmingham are red-hot title favourites for a swift return to the Premier League, but the bookmakers appear to have written North End off already. Preston start the new at Portman Road on August 9, but Chilvers says North End are ready for lift-off.

"The key is that we have strength in depth, and there is competition for virtually every position in the squad. There's going to be a real battle just to get into our first XI.

"For instance, there will be a real scrap for the full-back slot between Billy Jones and Michael Hart.

"I think we can take great heart from the progress we made from January onwards.

"We were in a tricky spot then, but everybody responded to the new manager and I always had faith that we'd get out of that and stay up.

"I've a lot of faith in our manager and this group of players and there's no reason why we can't challenge for the play-offs."

Chilvers will miss the first three months of the campaign as he returns to fitness after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the warm-up before the league clash at Charlton in March.

"I'm making good progress and I might be in contention by November. I think that is a realistic ambition," he added.

This sounds great. When did a player come out and say how well thing were under Simmo. This shows that already the players are confident and the morale is back within the players and they are happy to play for this manager.
I heard DS saying that we will definately have 1 more player in before the new season, maybe 2. If its took us this long to get them in then lets hope it is a signing worth waiting for(im sure it is.)
Makes you wonder if the player we are definately getting in has already agreed terms but perhaps he has a slight injury like Pearson thats going to Bham.

I hate tosound all doom and gloom but you can have the fittest people on the planet playing for you but if you don't have anyone putting the ball away promotion is a far off reality.

Yes he boys look hungyry and much fitter......

However........

We look toothless upfront and service from wide is missing in the form of a quality left winger.

Until those problems are sorted a mid table finish will be a good result.

Agree with you, Tom. We need two strikers in and Brett & Hawley out. Brown may get 10, Mellor 15 if he stays fit. We also need the midfield weighing in with a few more goals if we're to get up around the Playoffs. Chaplow and maybe Nicholson are our best options in the centre of the pitch, for me. Hopefully Macca will be back to his best, but I'm not holding my breath...

I agree with Snake, Macca looked good at Everton, but Lonergans distrubution was back to its worst. As for Brett and Hawley I think its clear that they aren't up to Championship standard which is a shame, but I cannot see both of them leaving because we don't have the money to buy 2 more strikers. I have heard rumours of Shrewsbury being intrested in Hawley?

Also I think something may happen with transfers soon, as Irvine seems to have something that could be completed at any minute(It said on here a few days 'bout him having a few plates spinning, and it also says the same on the bbc website) anyone know anything about who it is?

the only thing stopping us getting big names in is the equity level of the club .it could change for the better .with succses with what we have player wise .But do half of those players players also know that they may be gone if we go up ? .so it is comfortable to make four thousand pounds a week for some when if we go up they get moved to shrewsbury or macclesfield or maybe bury .no disrespect to those clubs who could come up trumps at any time .so could we we .but belief in a cause could unite the players a
