Alan Irvine said he did not rant and rave at his players at half-time as Preston North End roared back from a torrid start to earn a deserved point at Sheffield Wednesday.
The Lilywhites offered very little during the first period with Lee Grant a mere spectator in the home goal.

They fell behind to Sean McAllister's effort but Richard Chaplow's equaliser earned North End a point.

Alan Irvine said: "We didn't work well enough in the first half and Wednesday deserved their lead, but in the second half we were a lot better and definitely finished the game stronger and could have won it.

"I think everyone would like to think that I went in there and went absolutely ballistic but I didn't. I chose a calm head at half-time and spoke to the lads about how we got the good results that we have so far.

"I am delighted with the start though. It's seven points nearer to that first target of 50 to 53 points and if we can get that early, then we'll see whether we should get excited or not."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws said: "There is a tinge of disappointment because the first-half performance was unbelievable.

"I thought it was fantastic to watch, both wingers were on form and how we came in only 1-0 up amazed me.

"That's football though. You have to take your chances when they come and I did say at half-time that Preston will have a spell.

"For their goal, we allowed their full-back to get his head up and smash a 50-yard ball which had no pressure on it and a poor judgement call from Tommy, who thought he could head it. Unfortunately he missed it and of course they got through and finished it well."

This was like w in yesterday in my opinion. We should have been dean and buried by half-time with Wednesday's wing play outstanding and we couldn't live with them!!!

Matty Hill had a very poor game in my opinion and we missed Callum. Nicholson also had a bad 45 and it was the right decision to sub him and switch sedgey to RW.

However, Hawley ansd Wallace made the difference. Karl was brilliant and held the ball up as it had been coming straight back. Whaley was abysmal again and won't tackle!!!!

Error in judgementg by Lonners and it cost him as he couldn't get composed to face the shot.

Man of the match for me was Kenna who gave everything and was the only one battling in the first 4 for PNE. Incidentally what a ball by Wallace to sedgey for the goal. Our fitness told and we should have won it.

4 home games in the next 6 games for PNE and the Cup on Tuesday. No reason why we can't get a big haul of points on the board and get well up the table!!!!

I totally agree Tom,we need a striker to help Mellor and Brown if injuries come as this season goes on.All the strikers we have, each have their own skills to which the manager can use. So to find another one with something extra at the right price for us is as we know is proving difficult. But the boss WILL find him, even if it takes months.Same with a center back but as we know this is improving with Liam and Niel getting over their injuries, but that could change if the rocks in the middle of defence get injured. I, as all Whites around the globe are happy with our start, and our weekends are brighter for it!Up the whites.

we would not have gained a point without wallace coming on. it was the first time all day that we broke the mould of playing a basic ball. wallace thought differently, came inside and spanked it 40 yards to sedge. Perhaps one of the best passes in the circumstances i have seen for a while from pne. it was definately premier class. he needs to get fit and be played, he is to much quality to be on the bench. need brown back and youl isnt looking as strong with his distribution, stil a point wob for sure as wed looked a god side in the first half. we would not have gained a point without wallace coming on. it was the first time all day that we broke the mould of playing a basic ball. wallace thought differently, came inside and spanked it 40 yards to sedge. Just got back to Preston this afternoon (nursing a big headache). What a good result considering Wednesday's first half performance - although we were a bit poor as well. Too many long balls, except for wallace's to sedgey, which was an absolute pearler.

Mellor's link up play with whaley isn't right at the moment - they seem to be playing for each other rather than as a pairing. Some good analysis from Tom (the adonnis) Harrison and Mighty white.

Good come back again, good spirit, good squad, good manager, great fans! I'm happy with a point (a happy 'chappy' you could say).

News flash for you Mr Laws... Ross Wallace is not a full back.

As to having it all their own way, I cannot understand how Whaley's "goal" was given as offside in the first few minutes. Mellor received the ball off their defender. At the time of the original intended pass to Mellor, Mellor was offside. But as I say, it never reached him. By the time the defender passed it to him he was onside. He then crossed it for Whaley to score. If allowed, then who knows what could have happened? Seems the daft offside law is open to too much interpretation because it has been messed about with and diluted too much in recent years.

Not being given, Whaley berated the ref. It then seemed to shake his confidence for the rest of the time he was on the pitch. SW has been trying to rebuild his confidence over recent games and this could send him back to square one. I hope not. Lets hope he bags a hatrick against Derby on Tuesday to counteract this!

Sorry Mr Harrison but Kenna had a very poor first half but improved 2nd half when he started passing to feet. My man of the match would have to be St. Ledger who battled away against the annoying (as in gobby) Burton and his sidekick whose name escapes me at the minute. But hey, we all see things slightly different don't we!!
Agree we missed Callum though, Matty just wasn't on the ball at all. Hawley also did well when he came on, but quite rightly pass of the game Wallace left to Sedgwick right, across and Chappy says thank you very much!! As previously stated, a point well earned and a sign of positive things to come.
Let's back Alan in every way possible.
Onwards and upwards with the superwhites!!
